XBOX Drive Died - Can a hardmod save it?

My boys have an XBOX and I think the hard drive failed. It may still be readable but I know I can't save to it.

I can get the parts from a broken XBOX with a failed mobo and a good hard drive. I also have a PC on my workbench that I can attach the hard drive(s) to, if necessary.

I don't care about going online (no XBOX Live).

I looked at Xbox-Scene, but I can't tell what I need to do.

I know it is too late to do a soft mod because I can't save a game any longer.

Can I install a mod chip and continue to use it?

If so, what would be simple and cheap? (I can solder, but I don't want anything too complicated.)

TIA for the help.

No, it isn't under warranty. It's ancient.

It is a version 1.0 with the old Phillips reader in it, if this makes any difference.

I replaced the power supply on it once, so I am familiar with the insides.

Let me know what error code you're getting (I assume you're getting a screen that says "error" in a bunch of different languages with a # at the top corner...), and I'll help you further. Find me on AIM or something at luigionlsd
