xbox cord recall....my story

To be more specific....the POWER CORD was recalled. not the faulty xbox.

it was very lucky that it wasn't just inadvertantally left on, might have burnt the house down.
i dont really want to push the ""conspiracy" tone of the OP", but why would they be so eager to want it back as to call me on easter sun?
I really was not going to do anything about shareing my story before that phone call.

I also am really not looking for anything like millions of dollars, id be happy to have my used 3yr old xbox replaced.
just shareing my story to see if i was missing something and hopeing that others do NOT LEAVE THE OLD XBOX ON.
you see, i did not even know the xbox cord was on recall till i was surfing around looking for a replacement PS for it.


PS, i have a PSP and a PS2. cannot have to many game consoles 🙂

What legal liability? Something went wrong and MS is paying to fix it. Companies do this all of the time. What? Should he sue Microsoft because his Xbox malfunctioned without hurting anything. So what, the f*cking house smells like sh*t. Maybe Microsoft should mail over a bottle of Febreeze.

If the fire caused his house to smell like burned electronics, then yes, they should.

Well, a replacement power cord was issued, but from what I've read, it seems that the issue involves sub-standard-quality of the PSU inside the Xbox itself. The replacement power cord is a mitigating factor, to attempt to prevent... well, exactly this scenario from happening.

If the OP wants to contact a lawyer, there would likely be several willing to take this case for free, believe me. An (allegedly) defective consumer product, catches fire/starts smoking, in a customer's home. That's not good. What I think that MS is really worried about, is not just a damage award/settlement, but being forced (by the gov't) to recall *all* of the Xboxes, to replace the PSUs themselves, not just the cords.

Exactly! When APC had issues with some of their UPSes, they recalled the entire thing, and replaced the entire thing, they didn't just ship some substitue cord. (Granted, the defect was slightly different, but there was also a potential fire risk in that case as well.)

Well, if something like this approaches class-action status, or a gov't-mandated recall, it could get very expensive for MS. I'm sure that they want to prevent that as much as possible. You have to weigh whether you want another Xbox, quickly, or attempt to become a "Champion of Justice" for Xbox owners everywhere, and attempt to press for a class-action or recall, to prevent the possibility of this happening to others.

Or just simply take lots of pictures, and send them to a local TV news station, just to make MS look bad. 😛

You could talk nice and tell them it is inconvenient to not have the game console and you are upset. Tell them you think they should throw in a free game. This might be an advantage. Thell them your confidence in MS is shaken but you are still willing to give them a chance because you like their product and you plan on telling all your friends.

Are you kidding? No lawyer would take this case. Why, you ask???

Because there are literally NO DAMAGES that MS hasn't already stepped up to the plate about.

What do you think... That MS owes the OP a gajillion dollars because his $150 Xbox (which was actually worth about $80 used) smoked? Not hardly. The OP is owed a replacement to his damaged product, which MS has gone beyond the reasonable expectations to fufill their obligation.

People cry all the time about how screwed up our justice system is because of frivilous lawsuits. And when such a situation arises, many of you suggest throwing another onto the fire.

They are legally within bounds, they simply want to replace your damaged XBOX. Want to know why they want it so quickly? Because if you play with it you could get hurt, or you could burn down your home. (and they are NOT LIABLE) The power cable from the recall, that has been out Long before this thread, sends new power cables with a breaker on the end, which you have not recieved yet, because of YOUR negligence, as you have to sign up for one on there website. If you think you can take legal action, your wrong.

There has been a national recall of the products power cord and a warning sent out when using the xbox without the power cord.

In your case your xbox started to burn, but everything is ok, so now its time to send it in and get your replacement. They are neglegent in the original power cord design yes, so your xbox burnt up, and they are going to replace it. You cant sue for that, they put out a recall, and are cooperating.

The longer you hold on to it, the more of a chance you have of getting hurt using it. Keep in mind now that they have contacted you, and you are aware of the problem, PLUS they put forth effort to correct the problem by sending you a box to send it back for you new one, they are not liable in any way if you continue use of that product.

Dont waste time taking pictures! Why would you take pictures? to prove your xbox is burnt? No one is denying that, your getting a new one, with paid shipping!

DopeFiend is pretty uneducated in this matter, and I suggest you don't listen to him any further. In the mean time, you should read about your rights as a consumer when a product is recalled, as this product has been.

You should be extremely happy microsoft is putting forth its best effort to replace your xbox at no cost to you. Things like this could take months.
 
Don't forget to have them either replace or send back the disc for whatever game was being played at the time. I'm sure they don't want you plugging that thing back in to eject the disc.

They're just worried that some piece of trailer trash, like some of the first people to reply, will try to sue them for millions because of a faulty cable. You really can't blame them considering these idiots have won suits for spilling coffee on themselves (cost McDonalds millions & prices have risen by almost %50 since) and other such nonsense. If we, the people, don't call for a reform of our court systems then we are headed for a painful future...guaranteed. You children who suggested he sue over a dead Xbox have alot to learn about how your actions may affect the rest of us.

That pretty much sums it up, I dislike some M$ business practices. However, I HATE frivelous lawsuits. There is no reason to sue if they are being noble about the problem. They even sent you a box to ship the old XBox back, that is a very uncommon, courteous thing to do. That is strange they called on easter sunday though.
