Xbox Controller -> USB PC Mod

Hi, for anyone who has experience with the mod where you rip off the original xbox controller's connector and replace it with a USB connector, is it hard to do? I understand that the original connector is usb as well, but do the wires inside line up nicely when you stick a USB connector there? I'm very inexperienced with soldering but I want to try this.

Also, anyone know if it works just as well for third party controllers?

I've done it before using an XBox extension cable and a USB cable. Just hacked off the right ends, and luckily for me, the colors matched up. Thank you standardization. Just to be sure though I tested it with a multimeter.

I used an old version of XCtrl, and some games wouldn't detect the d-pad, or would detect the R and L triggers incorrectly. Some wouldn't know it's analog, and some would assign two different states to pressing in, and releasing, it was weird. I haven't tried XBCD though.

Yeah, best way is to chop up an extension cable. Fun times.

Here's a driver that's still updated: XBCD
There's also a diagram on the page showing the correct pins if wire colors don't match.
