Xbox Box 360 patch for playing Xbox games?

He wants to play Xbox games on his Xbox360 and wants to know how to do this.
Will I be able to download this for him on the pc, burn it to cd and have him update?

Or is it only available via a Microsoft Online update through the Xbox?
