Had to start laying mine on its side, standing up it has started to become very loud.

Time to check the manufacture warranty and return policy.

Vertical, but I'll probably lay it down when I clear some room for it. I really want to get a new entertainment center.

Laying down here. Sits on a glass shelf next to the left side of my entertainment system and Toshiba A3 player. There's not much room around it on either side, top, or bottom but it's still kicking.

vertical all the way! my ps2 lived a long life and still living being vertical. The only time i had a problem is when i moved it with a disc inside...and no suprise....scratched disc....

Vertical for the 360 looks a little more natural, but the ps3 vertical just looks odd....so i keep ps3 horizontal, 360 vertical

I believe that if your 360 is going to break from overheating then you will not be able to prevent it from happening no matter which way you choose provided that there is enough space around the 360 to properly ventilate the heat. The overheating issues are due to manufacturing defects which are only present is some boxes. While certain models are more prone to these defects than others, there is no single model which has been released where all of the boxes of that model contained this defect.

In short, don't worry about it. Just make sure there is space for ventilation and position the 360 in whatever way you think looks best.

laying down....it just bugs me otherwise.

Have it laying down currently, but it was vertical for about a year after I purchased it. I moved from the house I was in last year to my current apartment at school and now I have it laying down (thanks to added space). If you are going to stand it up... I would definitely make sure that the place you are standing it is level. However, I'm not sure that there should be any problems either way.
