It looked like MS had gotten rid of part# 9Z2-00001 (wireless receiver by itself) and replaced it with part# JR9-00001 (receiver + controller), which is more expensive and unnecessary if you already have a 360 with a controller. The receiver by itself appears to be back though.

I figured I'd share in case anyone else been trying to track one of these down for the past few months.

...the shipping is a bit steep, but still a lot cheaper than having to buy the receiver + controller combo.

Not that is seems a whole lot of people care, but newegg has it listed as deactivated again. Mine shipped already, so I wonder what they sent me.

This annoys me, I wanted one so I could get a wireless guitar for GHIII PC. I don't wanna spend $60 on the controller with 1. I found a few on Amazon and they wanted like $150 for them lol. Sucks I waited, because Best Buy use to stock dozens of them for 20 bucks.

This was exactly my situation. I waited, and then all of a sudden the stand alone receivers had totally dried up.

I want it so I can use my Xbox racing wheel with Windows, which doesn't even have a USB plug. I already have a wired 360 controller that I use for Windows, and of course I have the wireless one that came with my 360. I don't need another controller.

So, I finally received it from Newegg. It's sealed new in box, but it looks it has been around for a while. It had an RMA label stuck to it with tape dated March '09, and it didn't include the usual Newegg invoice. It sort of looks more like a new ebay item than what I'm used to getting from Newegg. I guess they were just clearing out old returned/un-opened stock, and MS didn't bring the receiver back.

...hope it works because I doubt there is a replacement available.

I have a receiver/controller combo I won on the Club Bing when it was still Club Live Search.

I personally wouldn't mind having to buy an extra controller to get the receiver. I keep my Xbox and my PC controllers separate; always having to pair one or the other is a PITA. Plus, if you break your main controller, you always have the second one as a backup!

Having a spare controller isn't bad, but some people might not need another controller or might not want a white controller to go with their Elite console or PC. It's just about choice IMO - don't make me buy something I might not want/need in order to buy something I do.

when i got my 360 wireless controller for windows for about 20 bucks, it contained the receiver... and batteries... why is the receiver by itself more expensive?

I don't know, maybe because people are idiots?

Seriously though, it sucks that they seem to have discontinued it, but it is still around. You just have to pay extra for another controller and then sell/give away that controller. Worst case is it costs you $40-$60 instead of the $20 it used to cost. No idea why someone would pay extra because they didn't want to pay extra.

EDIT: Oh right, because I bet a lot of people don't realize you can still get the wireless receiver if you buy it with a controller. I bet many people think it's a totally discontinued item and are willing to spend a lot to get it. All it takes is a few people like that to sustain much higher prices.
