Thanks for failing to mention this is a huge YMMV. Thanks for failing to mention if this is in store or online. Thanks for failing to mention what store in particular, if this is indeed in store.

Wow, sad, it's a pricing mistake and it's still $50. Good deal if it's normally $104, but for $50, I could like get a thousand foot cat 5 kit at geeks.com and still have plenty of cable left to hang everyone over at M$.

He wasn't asking any questions. OP said he "picked up 4 tonight" which implied that it's B&M. Good deal... compared to MS's $99 adapter. It's still a heck of a lot to pay for a wireless adapter, but MS can charge whatever they want for exclusive proprietary stuff.

And some people simply do not have the resources or time to make a cable run look good.

For example, to get a cable in my basement from where the router is on the 2nd level, I'd have to run it outside, along the roof of the patio, hide it in the siding, snake it into the basement, run it through the ceilings of the basement, and finally put a walljack there.

All of that is going to take longer and cost more (in time and supplies) then simply buying a wireless adapter.

The REAL sad thing is the fact that Microsoft released a console in 2005 without built-in wireless. Nothing but a money-grubbing action on their part, since they know that wireless has invaded the home and everyone will want to play their Xbox 360's on a wifi connection for convenience.

That is a god damn rip. They must be trying to make back all the money they are losing on the main hardware.

Let me guess... You aren't in the profession of making money.

They are already losing money on each console. Demand is already incredibly high. How could they have possibly benefitted from integrating WiFi???

well you can consider the demand high for the xbox 360 or u can say it's just very low in supplies.. In my city no more than 40 people lined up at BB, CC, Multiple Targets and Walmart to get an xbox 360 (at each store). The only reason why they sold out is because they didnt have enough units to go around. Had there been enough consoles let say.. 800,000 units there would enough to go around on launch day and then actually making enough to keep the stores replenish.

Btw, the wireless adapter is a rip off.. u can get an usb onsale for like 1/10th of the price.

The amount of people lined up is not a direct indicator of demand. Consider the fact that people lining up pretty much knew the supply. If BB has only 25 units to sell, and everyone knows this, you aren't going to see a line of 150 people outside.

Rumors are that MS sold through between 400k-500k units on launch day. Pre-orders were more than twice that, and it's impossible to estimate the demand for those who didn't pre-order.

But even if your speculations are 100% accurate, that doesn't make the inclusion of Wi-Fi to be a smart business decision.

wingznut tha'ts not true.. if you do the math IF there is an average of 40-50 xbox 360 for the major stores such as Walmart, CC, Bestbuy... if you calculate it there are 616 circuitcity stores, 688 bestbuy stores, 5150 walmart stores.. if you add it up 616+688+5150x40 units of xbox360= 258160 that's assuming they even got that much. At my CC they had 24 and all 3 of our Target had only 80 combined and all 3 of our walmart only had about 50-60. Assuming they even had 40-50 they would of shipped 259160 units on launch but they didn't have that much to begin with. Some walmart reportly only had 2 int he midwest and that's for a Super Walmart Center. So they had less than 400-500k on launch day for US. Maybe world wide.. but certainly not US figures.

So Walmart, CC and Best Buy were the only ones with X360's? The answer is no.

They were available at EBgames, Gamestop, ToysRUS, and plenty of other more localized electonics/gaming/computer stores, if they say they sold 400k then thats likely what they sold, there is no use in lying since the numbers will come out eventually.

And this is a great deal $50 for a product that is selling for $100 on ebay :D

but they are major retailers.. think about it.. if the major retailer has only on average 260,000~ units or so.. do you seriously think EB had that much to begin with? All the people I talk to or all the EB I called in town only had about 10 perstore.. does that add up to 500k? where did the other 250k came from? My friend works at the electronics department at TRU and they only had like 7 for public to sell and 25 to fulfill orders.. How many TRU are there? I bet there is no more than 5000.

I like how you just make these numbers up and try convince everyone they are fact. Gee, I think maybe all the major stores got about 40 or 50 so lets multiply that by 600 or so. That tells us how many were released. And I'm not counting other stores since I've never heard of them. So they probably don't exist.

Whatever.

And add an extra $50-$75 onto an already $400 console? For a feature the majority of people aren't going to use?

Why be so anal man? Why not just ask these questions Nicely?

Because anandtech is full of people like this. Makes me want to come here less and less. The respectability level around here has gone down the drain.

Picked one up Saturday night and I don't even have a 360 yet. I knew I would need it so why not basically let K-Mart pay me $50 to shop in their store? BTW, that was horrible in and of itself.

there are no kmarts near me! i have to decide if this is worth a drive. Do you think that they will tell me the price over the phone or is that too risky by clueing them in?

You're are using the smallest stores as examples. Plenty of Best Buy stores averaged at 100 units, while mine had near 200. Also Costco's had ~50, ToysR'Us, Kmart, Funco Land, EBgames, FYE, and small stores carried xbox on launch! There are tens of thousands of stores and your example was bad. Don't pretend like you can calculate how many were sold with your low figures. I do agree it was possibly lower then they said, but even 500k is not that many!
