Can you use any usb to wireless adapter for the 360 or does it have to be microsofts 100 dollar one?

You can only use MS's USB wireless adapter.

There are plenty of ethernet based wireless adapters that you can get for $50 or less though. Many have just taken to getting a wireless router, modding it with DD-WRT, and setting it up as a wireless accesspoint.

It's not a wireless USB adapter...it's a wireless bridge. Hence you not being able to plug in a USB wireless adapter for your PC into your 360.

The Airlink AR430W is also DD-WRT compatible. I got a couple at Fry's for $19.99 last week. They were going for $9.99 during Black Friday.

I implemented the DD-WRT solution on a spare, bricked WRT54G that I was storing because I didn't want to just throw it away. I had to recover the router using the TFTP fix. It wasn't as painful as I thought it'd be. Ended up fun and easy to do and saved some money. Now my 360 and HD DVD player in the living room have internet access.
