Xbox 360 Wired Controller

I have a wired xbox 360 controller that I want to use on my PC (WinXP Pro, SP2).
I downloaded the driver from microsoft, run the .exe and it says it installs fine.
I plug in the conroller, and windows tries to install it 4 times. I end up with 4 "device on USB 2.0 hub"

It doesn't matter if I cancel the wizard or not, I end up with 4 "device on USB 2.0 hub" and a $40 paperwieght.

Any ideas?

Edit: I uninstalled all of the "device on USB 2.0 Hub". I deleted the 'xbox 360 controller for windows' folder that the install program creates. I ran the install program again, and again it went fine, said it was installed. I pluged in the controller, the install wizard comes up. I pick "install from a specific location", "don't search, I will choose the driver to install", I picked "Microsoft" from the list of mfg's, scroll all the way to the bottom and pick "Xbox 360 controller for windows". Wait 2 seconds, BSOD. Nice!

Well, I tried it on my laptop, also WinXP Pro SP2. No problem at all, works fine, gave me no problems, figures. I did a system restore, using a restore point from yesterday. Installed the software, restarted, then plugged in the controller. Same problem, expect it only tries once (instead of 4 times), so I now have one "device on USB 2.0 hub". What a POS.

Are you actually using a hub, what happens if you plug it in direct?

Are you actually using a hub, what happens if you plug it in direct?

Yeah, I was plugging it into a hub, the two USB ports on my monitor. I plugged it in "direct", and it found it right away, works fine. Thanks bsobel!

This does beg the question, why doesn't it like the hub? I guess it would need to be a powered hub, but I would think the ports on my monitor would be. Maybe not?

Honestly don't know, I've always had horrible experiences with USB hubs. I've never had one that actually worked with all my devices (powered or unpowered). Always figured they'd 'get better', but in my expierence they haven't.

worked great here... all you have to do is...
plug in controller... it asks if you want to go to windows update for a driver.. say yes..
it will update and install the driver perfectly..
controller is my most fave gamepad for the PC ever...

worked great here... all you have to do is...

I just have to agree with you on this, if you are wondering about getting this controller, get it, you wont be unhappy, except for the cost!

Just a reminder. You don't have to buy the "MADE FOR PC" version. Cause you can get the drivers from the MS website. The made for pc version just comes with the drivers.

Considering that the xbox controller has force feedback motors, it's safe to assume that it would draw too much power from an unpowered hub that's integrated into a monitor. I'm surprised that WinXP didn't give a balloon bubble about a power surge on the port.

I've had good experiences using flash drives and other powered devices (mp3 player) with my Dell LCD's integrated hub. There was one time where I had a power surge on the port and had to cycle the display so the ports would work properly again.

love mine..
i have 2 of them both just plug in and went..
i think you got somehting wrong with your USB subsystem try motherboard drivers or windows update
