Xbox 360 vs PS3

Who cares at this point? No one knows what they have up their sleeves. There's so many rumours flying around from the xPod removable mp3 player to wireless controllers out of the box.

Both are probably stating power that will never be there. My thought is the first one to hit will have an edge. We saw it this time around. The PS3 might have more horsepower but we may be seeing 2nd generation games on XBOX at that point. Folks are impatient and always will be. When XBOX hits first, there's a slew of folks that will buy it because it's the latest and greatest. If everything is awesome at that point, it starts creeping into more people's homes because they too are impatient. At that point, PS3 better knock your socks off which is not typically what a Sony launch does.

Bah, PS3 will be more powerful... now the question is whether the PS3 will have as many features as the xbox. I'm pretty sure we'll see an HD and networking support this time around at least. If that's the case, the PS3 will pwn the xbox 2...

i guess you didn't even click on the link at the top of this thread did you ...

The Revolution will be a niche machine in the US. People are getting tired of the "4 games a year" release schedule Nintendo has been doing for years now. Sure, there's great games on the Gamecube, but most serious gamers have an XBOX or PS2. They might have picked up a GC for the few good games, but overall, I bet they play the GC much less if they have other systems. Anyone else getting tired of Mario-Tennis, Mario-Golf, Mario-Button Masher, Mario-This, Mario-That? Great games? Sure. Old, tired, and exhausted? Probably yes for many gamers.

exactly
also theo other thread says the ps3 will use the gf6 successor and they say that itll suck????
did i miss something where the 6 series sucked, i would think the next one would be even better

Backwards compatiblity to crap. Yes, some people like it, but not enough to make waves. Seriously, if I get an XBox 360, I'm definitely not going to be playing XBox 1 games on it. If I want to play XBox games, guess what, I'll play them on my XBox. I'm definitely not going to be selling my XBox for a BIG $10-20. Screw that!

I think the BIG thing people are overlooking here is, MS has built up a BAD ASS service called XBox Live! If you already have a subscription and play online, you know how bad ass it is. NO WAY am I going to a PlayStation and leaving Live! It is one of the biggest things that has happened to the console world! If I get a PS3, it would be because i already have an XBox 360. 😉

MS did some AWESOME things with the XBox's design. And this was there first attempt at the console market:
1. Standard four port controllers
2. Break away cables (I can't begin to describe how bad ass this was)
3. Hard drive (AWESOME)
4. And later on XBox Live!

Now imagine what they'll do with their second console. 🙂

All I have to say is this: if Xbox Next provides the processing power to play games like Madden in 1080i resolutions, I'm buying it the second Madden comes out for it.

BTW, the only console games I play are Madden and Halo, and Halo rules so much, the graphics don't really have to be all that good for me to get every version.

Sony will not have the same edge as they did - they won't have a year and a half start,
What were the ps2 launch titles again? All I can think of off hand is that Virtua Fighter game (or was it Tekken tag?). Either way, they were underwhelming, it wasn't until GT3 came out that there was finally a "must have" game for the system. A year after launch, MGS2 and GTA3 came out, both of which helped the ps2 a ton.

The xbox had Halo, but it wasn't the sensation at launch that it is now. The next xbox will probably launch with Halo 3, which is sure to sell systems so long as the cost isn't crazy high. The PS3 is supposed to launch with GTA4 though - which will sell systems just as well.

I wonder how they'll handle Xbox live. Will there be a completely new network, with a new account required to use it? I can see that pissing a lot of people off. Best way to do it would be two seperate networks, but the same account works on both.

uhh, jack, that was actually done LONG before xbox ... remember N64, and then Dreamcast? 😛

i would get xbox 2 over ps3 though due to what you said. xbox has been great to me, and i'll continue to support it. the xbox live service can't be touched by any other console. it really did get me back into hardcore baming. before i had xbox live, i would hardly game. now i do it almost every day.

its been rumored that xbox2 will have Halo 2.5 shipped with it, which will be an "upgrade" to Halo 2, but not a completely new game. also, the GTA series already has GTA5 out there, so your numbers are a little off heh.

i purchased a ps2 on its releas day, and like yo usaid, there wasn't anything spectacular with it. i purchased tekken tag and madden, and they were not really anything special, aside from the new graphics, although it wasn't THAT much better than dreamcast.

Another thing - I really hope the "two versions, with and w/o HDD" thing isn't true. If they don't make the hard drive standard equipment, the developers have no reason to program games to use it, because not everyone will have it. With the xbox, they knew that every console would have it, so they could use it to buffer content and decrease load times.

I've NEVER used a custom soundtrack, if that's all the HDD will be good for, I'll probably get the cheaper version.
the GTA series already has GTA5 out there, so your numbers are a little off heh.
I was thinking more along the lines that Vice City and San Adreas were based on the GTA3 engine rather than a new engine - which by that definition, means the next GTA game should be GTA4. Either way you're right 😀

i mean the majority of the people who buy the next gen consoles (as in ps3 or xbox2) will already own the previous one. and if they don't, i really don't think they are going to go out and buy an old ps2 game just to play it on their new ps3. they will be buying ps3 games.

i don't know, maybe thats just the way i think.

I agree with you.

Who the fvck plays Playstation 1 games on regular basis with a PS2? Nobody is revisting the original Gran Turismo when GT4 is out. And nobody will playing GT4 when GT5 comes out for PS3. GT4 will look like dog crap in comparison.

It's gamers like you who kill new games. Developers (that's right Steve Ballmer, developers) think that people only want to see kickass graphics and nothing else in new games, and let's face it, the maturity level of the newage gamers is that so that graphics IS all that matters. It's fvcking stupid. I still play certain PSX games on my PS2 simply because the GAME is good.

Who gives a flying fvck what it looks like? If I wanted sweet graphics I'd play games on my computer.

Xbox 2 will focus mainly on HD space and processing power/graphics. Sonys PS3 will focus on better games. Simple as that

eeeh wow, you took that a little too seriously. basically, if i wanted to play my ps1 games, i would play them on my ps1. i wouldn't boot them in my ps2. the majority of people who are gamers keep all their games and don't sell them, as well as consoles. if you trade in your ps2 or xbox when the next gen console comes out, you'll get what ... like $30 store credit? oh whoopity doo! most people rather hand onto them.

and as technology gets better, damn right i want the graphics to look better. i must be in the majority of the people who want games to look good since all the consoles coming out in the future are going to have better graphics, not to mention, that all these graphics cards getting better and better must tell developers SOMETHING about people wanting good looking games.

are you telling me that if a new fighting game came out for xbox 3 that looked like Street Fighter (but was not an actual SF game, just those 2D graphics), that from first impression or any point of view, you would think it "looks" like just as good as a game than Dead or Alive Ultimate? if you answer yes to that you are kidding yourself.

i personally like SF2 better than any other fighting game on XBox ... how does that make "us gamers kill games?" btw i've been gaming since i was a kid on atari and have pretty much had every console since ... and i don't play PC games ever for the most part.

You are definitely right. I forgot all about the N64 and Dreamcast. And I even own a Dreamcast. 😕

Well then it was a misunderstanding on my part. You should've explained what you meant better as you did in your second post. Of course I wouldn't want a NEW game to have SF 3D graphics, because it's not the original. But games don't get remembered from their graphics, they get remembered for their gameplay.

I'm just tired of hearing people only talk about graphics and not at all realizing that the developers and whatnot are only going to focus on that if that's all they have to. There were a lot of games for a while where it seemed like they took an originally good idea, turned it into a graphic-fest, and then in the end the final product was horrible.

Of course I want to see the next-gen systems be pushed to their limits graphically, but not at the expense of quality games.

Dude, I think an Atari 2600 is right up your alley. 😛

I'm just curious though ... what games have been flops in your eyes? like the ones that seemed they took on an original good idea then turned into an eye candy fest?

i honestly can't think of any game (console) that was looking to be a good game then disappointment in my eyes ... except Mario Kart 64. The one thing that is DEFINITELY evident in sequels now a days is that the sequel is always a little "noobified" and always seems to be an easier game than the previous game, for the most part.

Nah, I just beat San Andreas yesterday. I like my PS2, and even though the graphics don't compare to what my rig can produce, I don't care; some of the games are sweet.

Xbox 360 probably won't be backwards compatible, given:

Different CPU family (PowerPC vs. x86), x86 emulation runs dog-slow on Mac G5 VirtualPC, different video/sound hardware (ATI vs. nVidia). And finally, MS is keeping quiet which makes no sense if they managed to make it work.

So no Xbox1 titles will run with it and game selection will be weak.

Playstation 3 will almost certainly be backwards compatible, and PS2 to PS1 compatibility was excellent.

So PS3 will launch with both new titles and support for thousands of good old titles.

Backwards compatibility is a big plus for me, especially since I still play Symphony of the Night!

Final Fantasies do it for me.

True, but once you play a PS2 game today, going back and trying to play a PS1 game is a joke. It's night and day. It probably will be the same way (or close) between PS3 and PS2 games.

True for many PS1 action games, but I'm playing PS1 Final Fantasy IX now and am not bothered by the 320x240 graphics. And there are a lot of arcade games that are still fun to play at lo res. PS2 is full TV resolution so will still look decent in the PS3 era.
