XBOX 360 Shortages

"To ensure an immediate "sellout" of the Xbox 360 on launch day (therefore getting lots of media buzz about their new console), Microsoft will simply restrict the supply down to a trickle. My favorite part of the article: "In addition to limiting the per-store stock of consoles and having the retailers prepare to prominently note the unit's "sold out" status, Microsoft has allegedly asked Norwegian retailers to sign an agreement that they'll sell out of the consoles on the launch date." Looks like it's not a rumour.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20051101-5510.html

We reported a while back that signs from retailers indicated that the Xbox 360 console will be in short supply on its 11/22 launch date, and now that information has been semi-confirmed by Microsoft. In addition to quoting various analysts on Microsoft's plans and reasons for limiting the launch date supply, this Reuters piece quotes Microsoft's CFO to the effect that the Xbox 360 won't face the same spike-then-slump phenomenon that plauged Sony's PS2 launch. The idea seems to be that would-be Xbox 360 buyers will be less unhappy with a steady but limited supply of consoles than a massive sell-off followed buy a drought.

I think there's some significant merit to this idea of doing a kind of rolling, first come, first serve thing where the consoles are steadily and predictably doled out to buyers than having a ton of lucky gamers take home units initially followed by a period where nobody can get their hands on one. That being said, Microsoft's has other motives for restricting the launch supply than what they're stating publicly. As it turns out, a complete launch date sell-out would generate a ton of positive media coverage for the new console.

Gizmodo reports that in Norway, the launch marketing campaign aims to build hype around the console by trumpeting its "SOLD OUT!" status to would-be buyers. In addition to limiting the per-store stock of consoles and having the retailers prepare to prominently note the unit's "sold out" status, Microsoft has allegedly asked Norwegian retailers to sign an agreement that they'll sell out of the consoles on the launch date.

Here in the states, Kotaku leaks the details of Target's launch preparations. From Kotaku's Target mole:

The average store can expect to have between 25 and 50 consoles the first day, but it mentions elsewhere that this number can be as low as 10. This is all determined by average store volume. I checked the computer and the consoles, games and peripherals are already in the system, so if you have a generous Target employee they can check to see exactly the amount of consoles they have in when they get the shipment.

On Nov. 22:

Every store will print up tickets representing the number of 360's and core systems they have in stock. They are also supposed to print a large sign informing customers that the store has sold out and keep it on hand.

Check out this post for more store-by-store launch date inventory details.

In other Xbox 360 news, there have been some new technical details presented the CEDEC convention in Japan. Among them are the fact that there's some differentiation in the three cores' designated functions. The Xbox 360 system software runs on cores 1 and 2, with a minimum of 5% of the processing time of each of these cores being reserved for system-related tasks like networking, I/O, etc. For console developers, core 0 will be the primary core for running game code, because they'll have that core all to themselves.

This information fits somewhat with an Inquirer article stating that game designers will be using two cores to fill the graphics pipeline. Putting the pieces together, it appears that the game's host thread will run on core 0 and the data generation threads will run on cores 1 and 2. (For more on these two terms, see Part I of my Xbox 360 tech article.)

Other details include the fact that 7GB of the double-layer game DVD media are available for storing game data, and that the HD will be used as a cache for game data.

Why would you do something like this ?

Does it make the console look more popular ?

Are there any REALLY good games shipping with the console on the 22nd? If not, I really wouldn't want one yet anyway.

It removes the negative press from microsoft not being able to supply consoles that are in demand, and it also prevents whording of consoles and those ebay sales that reach up to the thousands for the console. If you try hard you will get on on launch day.

Yes.

Enough said.

But if it wasn't enough for you, the fact that people will be buying them for thousands of dollars on ebay should be enough.

When you reach the height of people paying as much as they can afford for them, then release some more, you KNOW that everyone who can afford one will buy it, just to have it.

If you don't believe that, do your homework on the release of the Playstation 2 and the first XBox.

That's all the more that needs to be said.

This makes me glad that I'm not planning on waiting in line outside of some gaming store come the 22nd. Personally, I might not get a new console at all, let alone right at launch. I think it'll be interesting, though, to see if this plan Microsoft has cooked up will actually work.

I think all the talk of shortages is bunk. MS has outstanding yields with all their chips. If you REALLY want one on launch day, you will be able to find one. Just go to Best Buy at opening. They are supposed to get 300 consoles per store. Then 2 weeks later the second shipment will arrive well before christmas.

The launch lineup is probably the best ever seen for a console. There are a ton of quality games. I stopped myself at 7 games but I could easily get 10 quality titles. Of course I wouldn't be gettin so many games if I didn't win the console itself. :p BTW the games I am getting are Kameo, Project Gotham Racing 3, Perfect Dark Zero, Call of Duty 2, Quake 4, King Kong, and Condemned: Criminal Origins. Plus I get either NFS:Most Wanted or Madden 06 with my free console (it's a random pick). I was also planning on getting Elder Scrolls: Oblivion but it's been pushed to January. I've also been considering Tiger Woods 06 cause you can aim for the crowds now, even hit em in the balls and watch them fall down in pain. :D

am I the only one not excited about xbox360, how is a new system going to make the games that have been coming out magically better. I've been dissappointed with most of the recent computer releases. I bought civ4 day it came out and boy was that a let down. Is it the wow factor of being new, I just don't get it? 9 out of the 10 games I see listed above are rehashes. I guess I'm more concerned with gameplay than the wow factor of shiny graphics that wears off in about 10 minutes when I realize the game sucks and I'm bored. I mean do we really need another need for speed and tony hawk game.

I feel "meh" about the 360 until I played one in Walmart. Now I have to have one. It really is incredible.

I'll wait until Xbox 720 or Xbox 1080 comes out... I hear they are already in the works for the next generation game console to rip off consumers.

Well, I just hope these are available soon... I don't need it on the first day.

I ended up with an Xbox because Sony pissed me off with their fake shortages... I could understand shortages for a couple months but when xbox became available and they still played that "shortage" game... screw em, I'm no victim.

I am wondering how much better Q4 will play on this new $300 xbox versus my aging 3.45GHz, Radeon9800Pro(128mb), lol.

Just FYI, When the PS2 launched, I preordered mine about a month after preorders started at EBgames. I got a letter telling me it wouldnt ship until 3 weeks after lunch... I'm patient so I can wait... It arrived 2 days after the launch date anyway.

I agree with you. I watched some kid play the COD2 demo, and was quite impressed. If I can get over 1k for mine though, it's gone.

I thought the same back when the PS2 came out too, but then people at work were asking me to sell it to them for $800. I  my PS2 though, so selling it wasn't an option.
