XBOX 360 question

I pre-ordered the 360 so I could play Elder Scrolls when it launches but I found out that the first batch will not have the HD-DVD drive, instead having a classic DVD drive. I really don't want to buy 2, so what are the downsides to just getting one or the other? Thanks.

Well, there's no confirmation that the X360 will ever have a HD-DVD drive. And if it does, there is no telling when. Just rumors now.

I really wouldn't worry about it and go ahead and get the console when it comes out or when Elder Scrolls comes out.

360 will definitely ship initially with just a plain DVD, MS has confirmed this.

MS has not said for sure that they will ever add HD-DVD or blu-ray. Rumor sites saying HD-DVD for sure were misquoting an article (see mainpage of ArsTechnica.com).

This means 360 software may never be written to use the capacity of HD-DVD (15 GB single-layer vs. 8.x standard DVD dual-layer) since there will be millions of units with just plain DVD.

It is official that the 360 is shipping with a dual-layer DVD drive. The HD-DVD stuff is just rumors.

If the 360 ships with a standard DVD drive then thats what the games will use. Even if they eventually switch to HD-DVD or Blu-Ray they would have millions of units that can't play the new games.

If you want a 360 go ahead and preorder one. I'm personally going to wait for a price drop and for them to work some of the bugs out.

The HD-DVD drive were rumors. If MS does add it, it will be only for playback functionality and will be far off in the future when the Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD match is settled.

it probably won't. its not an issue. most xbox games don't take up most of 1 layer dvd, let alone dual layer. heck look at most pc games... and remember 6.5cds=1layer dvd. whens the last time u saw a 12cd pc game?

Yep, plus MS is using some sort of fancy compression to help with space. Half-Life2 on the Xbox is supposed to be using it.

well i think that NOT having HD-DVD in the 360 will hurt HD-DVD sales and the PS3 having Blu-Ray will majorly help just like the PS2 did with DVD

Well, that was the whole point behind Sony putting BluRay in the PS3. They are one of the major backers of BluRay and have alot of money invested in the technology. Since BluRay and HD-DVD can't work things out between them, Sony is going to try and make BluRay the defacto standard.

The only thing is, will the PS3 be priced reasonably enough? Kutaragi has been making some wild statements about the cost of the PS3. Either he's an idiot and the PS3 is going to be selling for around $500 or he's setting it up for everyone to think they are getting a great bargain when the PS3 comes out between $300 and $400.
