Xbox 360 overheating

So I've been through all the RRoD hoopla before... that's not my issue now. I'm getting the double red lights which signifies overheating. If I take the case off the 360 everything is fine and I can play games. Though I can hear the case fans really wind up and start trying to cool everything down (telling me its getting hotter than normal in there)

the Heatsinks get pretty warm to the touch so it seems as is is they have good contact with the chips surface as heat is transferring to them.

Regardless, I pulled them off and put some Arctic Silver 5 on there just to be on the safe side. (the still are getting warm to the touch and the fans still spin up quite a bit though).

I'm kind of not sure what to do at this point I guess. What else can I do to cool this thing down?

Any suggestions?

bah this stinks. I put the casing back and and within 2mins it dies with the 2 Red Lights. Case off and it works fine. HS is nice and hot too. Very Very odd. Obviously the HS is doing it job, just the CPU/GPU are getting scorching hot

Take off the HS's and replace crappy TP with AS5 or the likes.

In his first post - "Regardless, I pulled them off and put some Arctic Silver 5 on there just to be on the safe side."

Silly question, but is the 360 in some kind of enclosure? That could explain why taking the cover off relieves the overheating but putting it back on causes it to overheat again. It could be that there isn't enough room for the hot air to exhaust out.

This guy modded the air flow

I'm going to have to try this method see if it helps
I figured cutting out those restricting holes would be a huge help too.

FYI, I applied this tweak this weekend. It is AMAZING how much better the 360 is cooled now. Kid was gaming for over an hour in a hot house (it was warm this weekend) and the fans barely spun up.

 Good to hear a cheap fix did the trick.
