XBox 360 or PS3?

You'd want the new 360 slim if you get a 360, since it's supposed to be very quiet (my Jasper 360 Elite is not), includes wifi (costs +$100 older models) and separate optical out, and 250GB storage instead of 120. Also, the warranty only lasts 1 year (except "RRoD" failures) and out-of-warranty repairs on the DVD drive cost $100.

Otherwise, both are good choices, both are $299, both play Netflix exactly the same except the PS3 makes you put a software disc in the drive to use their player.

The 360 does make you pay for xbox live gold to play netflix though, so that's an extra $30-40 a year.

Another qestion: Does anyone use NetFlix with their XBox? If so, how well does it work? Can you just watch movie after movie as much as you want, or do they limit you to a certain number of movies per day?

Haven't run into any limits yet. Though, the PS3 can also stream Netflix. You have to request a disc from Netflix though and you have to use that disc whenever you stream.

There is that new xbox that came out, so I would probably get that.

I always thought the PS3 was not worth it.

The graphics between the two are very comparable.

360 has a better controller, better online, better exclusive games IMO. Just no reason for a PS3 unless you want BluRay or you like one of the lame exclusives.

I don't have either because PC is superior, but if I had one it would be a 360. Also, I always hear about Xbox Live Gold being more like $35/yr if you look around. The extra $3/mo over PS3 is worth it from what I've used of both networks.

If you are a PC gamer, and you have been playing the PC, really there are no decent exclusives for the 360.

The 360 has a terrible exclusive line-up. The only decent exclusives I can think of off the top of my head is Halo 3 and Gears of War, both of which are pretty mediocre shooters.

There are also some other okay exclusives, like Banjoo and Kazooie and Brutal Legend, but nothing spectacular.

The PS3 has a much better line of exclusives in my opinion, with Demon's Souls (the best console game this gen for me), Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Valkyria Chronicles, God of War, inFamous. The PS3's shooters, Resistance and Killzone, are about as good as those on the 360, which is really all the 360 has.

I have all systems (PS3, Wii, 360, DS, PSP, PC), and the 360 is by far the least used. I rarely play it, and there are very few titles that I own for it (due to their being very few great titles for it).

However, 360 online capability is better. but, you do have to pay for it. The PS3's online capabilities are fine for me, and I don't find what the 360 offers worth the $50. My 360 isn't even connected to the internet anymore.

If you're not going to be playing online alot, it is generally agreed that the PS3 has much, much better exclusives. Also, unlike the 360, you have to have the paid online service to use Netflix. PS3 is far more reliable, customizable and cheaper in the long run.

They both suck if you're coming from PC gaming. Massive downgrade plus you pay for freeking everything (online, expansions, etc). Get a PC, hook it to your TV with DVI->HDMI, and just use a 360 wireless controller with it or a wireless keyboard.

I've had the 360 for a while now, and got the PS3 a few weeks back. I definitely prefer the 360 despite its flaws.

-I really don't like the PS3 controller, and you wouldn't think the trigger and analog stick shape is a big deal but for me they've made a huge difference and are much better on the 360. The shape and rubber on the PS3 sticks isn't great, so I find my fingers drifting off the stick way too often. Because of that I'll probably get all cross platform games for the 360 barring some huge difference that makes the PS3 better, but that has yet to happen from what I've seen.

-Xbox live is better, and totally worth the price.

-Exclusives are a wash for me. There's a choice few on each console that I enjoy, and a number I don't care for.

-360 is noticeably louder (but I have an old version) and to be honest I didn't ever notice the high pitched whine of the fan until I got a PS3. Now when I play the 360 I hear it easily. New version is quieter though I guess.

If you want blu-ray then PS3, if you want anything else in that area go Xbox.

I have 3 xboxs and play games and use it as a media center. Don;t need blu-ray so that was easy for me.

Another qestion: Does anyone use NetFlix with their XBox? If so, how well does it work? Can you just watch movie after movie as much as you want, or do they limit you to a certain number of movies per day?

It works great and there are no limits AFAIK. Also, keep in mind that the PS3 can also do Netflix with the addition of the free Netflix player disc, so that really isn't an Xbox exclusive like it once was. Also, you can get a year of Xbox Live for between $30 and $40, not $50.

Do you have friends that you will play with? If so, what do they have?

PS3...

Better exclusives imo (Demon's Soul if you like RPGs!)...

Xbox was never an option for me because of the ugly white design which didn't fit into my living room...
Now they have a better design, but i already own a PC and a PS3 and i really see no point in getting an 3rd system...

Another thought: Since you have to pay to play online against other people with the XBox 360, does that make game play better (ie keeping out the "riff raff", the kids with no manners, etc)?

To me, this is the single biggest advantage the PS3 has over the 360. Live seems to have armies worth of ~12 year old kids and too many of them go off on vulgar/racist rants far too often. If you go with a 360, get comfortable with the ignore feature on Live and be prepared to use it(helps a lot). PSN has far less people that have headsets so it significantly reduces the amount of chatter you deal with when playing a game. This also means you have less oppurtunity to have a decent conversation with someone else, but IMO that is far less frequent then the small kids with poor parents.

Most people seem to like Live a lot better then PSN, for me I would rather pay for PSN then play on Live free. Cross game chat/invites seem to be a big deal for some people and if it is for you then Live would be the way to go. I just can't stand the kids on Live.

Which one would have a better resale value?

The PS3, easily so. The PS3 is a 3D BRD on top of being a game console, the 360 has the poorest reliability record for a console that I can recall(I've been gaming on consoles since the 70s). The newer 360s are likely to be far better then the prior offerings, but the damage has been done to its' reputation already.

I've been a PC gamer all my life

Most of the 360s "exclusives" are titles that are on the PC, the PS3 tends to have exclusives that are only available on the PS3. If you really enjoy PC style games, the 360 has more of them without a doubt. If you are more interested in playing console style games, the PS3 is the way to go.

I've owned both so I'll chime in here as it's totally honest and unbiased opinion.
Ps3 has better exclusives, that's it. The 360 has better online features. Kids are online with both systems and I heard more vulgar things on psn then live.

Live is worth the $3 a month. Ps3 updates and downloads are super slow. If your not playing online at all get a ps3, both uncharted games, gow, and little big planet.

I like the 360 controller better and I have about 15 friends with a 360, that's why I sold the ps3 I had. Pc gaming sucks balls, don't hook your pc up to the tv. I did and it was a waste. Also buy read dead redemption that game is awesome...

As far as RPGs and platformers, the PS3 wins. I have both, and I would say I play my PS3 than I play my 360. I really only use my 360 to play with friends.

Ps3 only wins with exclusives, 360 doesn't have anything that can touch lbp, gow, or uncharted. Sony has the better exclusives for sure, the online sucks tho..

I've got both systems and have had both since about 6 months into launch. I always use to say the 360 was the better system with better exclusives but after the last year I'm leaning towards the ps3. The game catalogue on the PS3 has really improved... especially exclusives.

If you plan on playing online though go 360. Otherwise the truth is you can't go wrong with either especially for a 6 month period that you will be recuperating.

Another cool perk to the 360 is, you can download 360 games. Very cool and convenient option. I have a few downloaded 360 games and love the fact that I don't have to get up off the couch to change games. The downside, they're usually older game.

Why I love my PS3:
Blu-Ray Player for my HD-TV (with firmware updates it will become 3D Capable)
Plays Netflix Streaming (currently with a disc inserted, but a native app is in the works)
Native MLB.tv app is awesome
Great media system for sharing with a PC
Exclusives LBP, Uncharted 1/2, GoW 1-3, InFamous, KillZone, Heavy Rain, MGS4, etc.
Controllers are chargeable by plugging them into any USB device (unlike XBox controllers)

When it comes down to it, it's simple. If you play a lot of online games (CoD games, Madden, etc.) and have friends with a system, choose that system. If you have no friends with systems, but still want to play a lot of MP, choose the 360. If you have a HDTV and want a BRD player, choose the PS3. If you don't want to play online, choose whichever console has the exclusives you prefer. For me, I do all my online gaming on my PC (EVE, TF2, DoTA, etc.) and primarily single player stuff off on my PS3. Also, I wanted a BRD player and wanted to play the PS3 exclusives. So my choice was easy.

Asking 360 or PS3 is like asking a bunch of car guys "Ford or Chevy". You're going to get each side defending theirs passionately but walk out with no real answer.

Anyway, I think if you have a capable gaming PC, there's no need to own a 360. The 360 doesn't have a lot of exclusive titles being released for it anymore. Most eventually wind up on PC through Steam or other direct-download services. So going with a PS3 is a no-brainer in this situation. Lot's of solid exclusive titles.

If you don't have a gaming PC, then it's more difficult. I'd say play the games, try both systems out, then see what you like best. 360 has the better online experience bar none so if you like playing games like Modern Warfare 2, it's the one to get. PS3 has the better exclusive line up (by critics ratings) and it's a far more capable home theatre PC. Performance really isn't a problem between the two anymore, not like it once was anyway.

You can set up live so that you can only hear your friends' voice chat. I forget where the setting is, but it rules.

To the OP: The biggest factor in this is what your friends have. Get the system they all have, so you can play with them. I have both a PS3 and 360. I actually think the PS3 is the better system but, because of all my friends being on 360, the PS3 is barely played except for the occasional God of War 3 or Uncharted 2.

No they don't. PC gaming sucks my balls. Been there, done that, and I'm MUCH happier gaming on my consoles now.

That being said, I just picked up the new 360 slim today and WOW, this thing is awesome. Like others have said, this is what the 360 SHOULD have been at release. Super quiet, more compact, touch sensitive buttons and much better looking than the older 360s models. The built in wifi 802.11n isn't bad either. 🙂 Anyway, now I have to figure out what I'm going to do with my old 360 Elite.

I have both, the PS3 is used as a blu-ray player now. My local target still has "old style" 360 elites for 200$ if you don't need the built in wireless. I find xbox live to be a lot better than PSN, well worth the 30$ a month. As far as annoying kids I found the PSN to be worse IMO, but you can mute them all day long on both systems.
