That's not a fair assessment. It seems to me like you're lumping all anime together into one category of "suck". I'm not a fan of anime tv series, but I love a lot of anime movies. Spirited Away and Miyazaki's other movies are masterpieces of animation. Doing any of his films with live actors wouldn't even come close to what he has created using animation. The kind of anime my younger brother is addicted to seems like they're meant for younger audiences, but over here in the US everyone gobbles them up. I personally don't get into any of that, maybe that is what you've seen from your friend all the time? If you haven't seen any Miyazaki movies, or Grave of the Fireflies then you're really missing out on great movies. You need not go near any of the seziure enducing shows either.

Also, I'm not surprised to see the Xbox 360 flop over there. The original did horrible and with launch titles like these they were just asking for it again.

300,000 360s to ship out this week
American Technology Research analyst P.J. McNealy expects that 300,000 more Xbox 360 units will ship this week in North America.

The additional 300,000 units will bring the worldwide total to around 1 million shipped, which includes 300,000 for Europe, 100,000 for Japan, and the initial North American shipment of 300,000 to 400,000. Microsoft has repeatedly expressed that their goal is to ship 3 million Xbox 360s worldwide in its first 90 days on the market. McNealy said that he expects the console to sell just over 1.5 million units by the end of December, which puts Microsoft on track with their goal.

In other news, 500k of the 90 day allotment will be purchased and then resold on ebay for at least double its original price. Consumers thank MS for this strategy. A Microsoft representative commented, "If we can take a loss on this product so that someone else can double their money then that's just a good business practice."

When asked if he was referring to Microsoft or the ebay salesperson he had no comment.

500K lol .. Its uptill its only been 31000 and i don't think it will hit 500K magically but yeah PSP was much wores. that was 200,000 and PS2 was about 20,000 on the 1st few weeks. I read a ebay article ages ago at gamespot.

7,700 Xbox 360s had sold at an average price of $786

Anyways XBOX 360 has a long way to go before it can beat PSP.

From Dec to September PSP was overpriced like hell because it was only avaliable in USA/JAPAN.

Pathetic? The only launch that had a better lineup of games was the Dreamcast's launch.

PS2 didn't come close, the only thing Xbox had was Halo (although that was a triple-A title), gamecube had rogue squadron and SSB:M (so it came friggin close, but games like Luigi's Mansion..ugh)..

Perfect Dark Zero, a good FPS, PGR3, probably the best arcadey racing game ever, and Kameo, a great platformer aren't enough? Then there's unique titles like Condemned..

Q: Why care if it sells well in Japan?

A: If less are sold worldwide, profit will be smaller thus making less of a motivation for software companies to release good titles.

Nationalistic? The Japanese have an obsession with things American.

Not so much any more. The time I spent working in Tokyo (approx 3 months) I spent the whole time talking to people between the ages of 18 to 40. Of course its nothing like scientific, but all those who where 35+ were into western cars and western films, western music and so on.
Anyone younger has a lot stronger sense of national pride as they are not affected by 'war-shame.' They are very nationalistic, they have lived completely in the era of Japanese electronics and Japanese youth culture. They have a passing interest in things such as the a particular american film star, an english soccer play (read Beckham) etc. But 99% of what they want to see is Japanese technology, Japanese Film (Manga and conventional) and Japanese Music.

They laugh at their parents liking american stuff, like I laugh at my parents for their 60's music and beatles obsession.

I'm not sure where your logic comes from, either complete naivety or plain stupidity, but to just give up on a huge market would be the stupidest business move a company could make.

But they won't make money from it. Trust me their market share will not increase, will possibly decrease and yet they are spending more money on Japan than any other region I reckon with the their discounted premium only boxes, heavy marketing and so on. Remember than games sales will drive their profit and not the consoles themselves... there will simply not be enough games to interest the Japanese market. Sure there will be a few token ones but the royalties from those games will nowhere near be enough.

meh, its just the japanese. u know it wasn't until this year that ipod beat sonys players in japan? yea wtf eh? and sonys players have been totally inferior for the longest time, one can argue they still are. ipods been king in the us for the longest time, total domination. so theres a large nationalistic component i guess. japanese buying japanese.

This isn't even a surprise for me. Look at the lame games for the launch. Tetris? WTF?
Even the U.S. launch games are lame.

Well, the first Xbox was nothing short of a sales failure in Japan, but there were no shortage of good titles.

My vote is for the latter.

bs theres always a shortage, they simply can't build such excess manufacturing capacity to satisfy a worldwide launch demand, it would be a stupid one off massive expense that would wipe out all chance of profit. and theres no time to stockpile this sorta thing either so it is the way it is and has always been.

They should just start releasing these consoles just like any other consumer electronics product. Start off with the price high as the supply is low, say $1000 for an Xbox, and then you gradually drop it as your ability to ship additional units is increased.

It's obvious that people out there were willing to pay $800 to almost $2000 for a 360 so why should some random joe ebay guy make the money instead of Microsoft. Then we wouldn't be pissed about a shortage, right?

Yeah, the last console that was released for a $700+ pricetag tanked out of the starting gates.

ha..yea..the 3DO. There were multiple versions of it too...sort of...just different looking consoles with the same hardware inside. 3DO didn't last too long but hey..isn't that where Madden got its first start in the 3D world?? Same goes for Road Rash.

no, justice would be ps3 bombing after all their rootkit bullsh*t and such copyright protection madness.
