I currently have my 360 hooked up to my computer via line-in. If I bought a 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter could I plug in any microphone into the controller or does that not work?
I bought two 3.5mm(F) to 2.5mm(M) adapters from Monoprice recently for the exact purpose. It worked fine for me but not for my buddy. But it's probably his mic was a POS. Cell phone headsets and such work too (since they are 2.5mm)

Yep, this. I used to actually do the opposite, using my 2.5mm original XBox Live headset for PC voice coms and such by using a 2.5mm(F) to 3.5mm(M) adapter. Actually had awesome sound/mic quality.....but broke after a bit.
To the OP, I think you need a 3-pole 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter though if you have a headset with volume/mute control.
