XBOX 360 is broken

I had to replace my 2 360's a combined 4 times. I was in the same situation as you for the last time, where it was beyond 1 year and was not the RROD but I knew it was a precursor to it. I'm not advocating this but I was fed up with it, so I simply told them it was the RROD and sent it in for repair for free. Fortunately I got a replacement back no problem at all. YMMV.

After doing some more research, green/purple is not a symptom of the GPU solder cracking, but rather the ANA/HANA scaler's solder cracking. I have two choices, towel trick, or opening it up and using a heat gun to reball the solder.

I thought most people just wrapped it in towels and ran it until it did RRoD before returning it when this happened?

I just tried the towel trick. Instead of getting RRoD, the XBOX actually turned on and worked regularly for about one minute, then everything turned green and purple, but I kept playing anyways, and when I turned it off and went back to not powering up.

I got nothing to lose. If they send it back, I'll just open it up and reball the solder. My roommate DID say it RRoD'd once, although he didn't mention how many rings (it might have been the HDMI cable disconnected).

The 360 is a piece of shit. I can't get Star Ocean to play for 10 minutes before it starts freezing. A quick Google search showed that I am not alone. Just like cars, American companies shouldn't be making consoles -- they just produce sucky crap.

I don't think in my whole life I have ever seen ANY console game outright freeze every time it was played. Not even the NES froze as much once you blew into it.

Does it freeze when you install it to the hard drive? I played it for 2-3 hours straight before and had no problems with that game. (I just can't stand the dubbing from Welch and Edge, sometimes Faize pisses me off too)

They removed the red led's so they can stop fixing it for free. 😉

HAHA, That sounds like something Microsoft would do.

I'm convinced they did too. Scaler/GPU problems cause 3 RRoD, except I'm not getting them. The scaler can also cause the E74 error, except if I had it I wouldn't know since I can't get any video output.

I managed to get 2 RRoD, but I think that means overheating. I just played GRAW2 for 10 minutes, no green/purple. Did I cure it?

Just do what I did... call them and tell them it RRoD's sporadically. Of course, mine actually DID RRoD maybe 1 in 10 powerups... it just locked up at the splash screen every other time.

Will you actually follow through and get that PS3 or not?

I want one...but I don't play enough games to justify it. The Xbox horror stories keep me away - I don't want problematic hardware period. Ps3 and Wii seem to be rock solid in comparison to the RROD machine. Then again this is what happens when console development gets rushed.

I have a launch day Wii, it's fucking awesome. I bought my XBOX in September of 07, and it's already broken. Gamecube since 02, no problems, XBOX since 03 or 04, no problems, N64 from 1998, no problems. My fucking GameBoy Pocket still works, and I bought it 13 years ago.

It most certainly is something they would do. I recall in Active Directory Users and Computers you used to be able to pull up a list of available groups. The dialog was to slow loading for many users, not sure why. After the complaints, Microsoft "fixed" the problem by removing the option altogether for 2003. 😛

Yeah, and I tried setting it to 720p also. 🙁 It always happens when I ride the rabbit. It's really aggravating, and from what I hear, it gets worse on Disc 3. I am going to delete and reinstall the disk to my HDD later tonight.

Call them up and say, "My Xbox turned off when I was playing this game. I turned it back on and there were three red lights on the front, so I turned it off for a few hours and let it cool off. Now I'm turning it on again and it kind of works, but the picture is all distorted, there's bands that flash across the screen and tiles missing."

You'll have your box and UPS shipping label in about a week.
