Microsoft Confirmed Specifications:

Specs on XBox.com

Peripheral Specifications

Specs confirm the leaked specs leaked earlier (see below). No mention of backwards compatibility has been made yet.

Backwards Compatibility

Nothing solid on this has been announced yet, will not know until E3. Just wanted to clarify this in the top thread since it wasn't more apparent. New info grabbed from XBox-Scene about B.C.:

* Backward Compatible or not?
That's probably the hottest question left unanswered so far by Microsoft.
As recently as last week, a Microsoft executive said Microsoft hadn't yet determined whether the new Xbox 360 would be backward compatible. They cite a host of technical issues as reason because the console is moving from a Intel x86 based CPU to an IBM PowerPC and from an Nvidia GPU to one made by ATI. Analysts say it may come down to whether Microsoft is able to license patented technology from the cpu/gpu vendors of the original Xbox or find a way to emulate Xbox1 games without having to pay license fees.
The images shown on the new Xbox Live demos where they use images of Halo 2 and Crimson Skies and the fact that people are playing Xbox1 games on the Xbox360 on the ourcolony.net video gives some credence to the theory of Microsoft supporting backward compatibility. It atleast suggests that the test units are backward compatible. But it could be because Microsoft tries to prevent us from seeing Xbox 360 games in action as well.

OLD/RUMORED INFO: Edit 5/11: HD DVD support added to XBox 360, thanks again to Queasy

http://www.videobusiness.com/article.asp?articleID=10496&catType=NEWS

Sony is already planning to integrate Blu-ray into the Playstation 3, while Microsoft is expected to announce this week that HD DVD will be a non-exclusive component of the upcoming Xbox 360. Both next-gen gaming consoles will be used for DVD playback and home media networking.

Edit 5/10: Prices leaked, thanks to Queasy

XGP Gaming is reporting ?leaked? Xbox 360 prices. The basic package is expected to retail for $299.99 and will include the console, one controller and all the requisite cables.

The deluxe package is expected include an extra controller, the remote, and a hard disk drive loaded with extra content. It may also include the eyetoy-like camera, though details are still sketchy. The price? $360. Where in the world did they come up with that crazy number?

Original Posting

Cliffnotes:

Days before Microsoft is due to air a special event on MTV across the world, specifications for the next generation Xbox have been posted in full online. Amongst the details leaked is word of two Xbox live services, a silver free service and a gold paid service.
"There will be two versions of Xbox Live. Silver is free (everyone gets it), and Gold is a paid subscription, like the current XBL. It looks like Xbox Live will be free on the weekends for everyone; Gold members will get it all the time, obviously. Current Xbox Live accounts will carry over to the 360 and become Gold Xbox Live accounts. Both Gold and Silver members will be able to download demos, trailers, and other content through XBL."

The XBox 360 CPU is said to have 3 symmetrical cores running at 3.2 GHz a piece, 1MB of L2 Cache and single VMX-128 vector unit per core. The ATI graphics processor will run at 500MHz with 10 MB embedded DRAM and contain 48 parallel floating-point shader pipelines. System memory is expected to be comprised of 512MB GDDR3 RAM and have a FSP capable of shunting data around at 21.6GB/s.
Microsoft is also rumoured to support DVD-Video, DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, CD-DA, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, WMA CD, MP3 CD, and JPEG Photo CD in the new XBox 360 optical drive.

Any word on that yet? Any thoughts?

All the rumours right now suggest $299 or $399 with the HD and backwards compatability.

none of this really matters..........

important things:
1. what games are coming out on launch.
2. are older xbox games backwards compatible.

ps2 is the oldest of the current gen consoles and it still has a strong (if not the strongest) fanbase.

It's smaller than the original XBOX.

It will go on sale in November according to leaks from the MTV event.

What happened to Blue-ray or HDDVD support? I might have gotten it if it was included, but it looks like I'll be waiting for PS3. I bet I'm not alone.

those specs are insane!!!! if true this thing will dominate pc gaming for a while, youd have to pay two or three times as much just to get a comparable vid card of which will not be available for many months up to a year

It was dropped a few months ago. Cost/value. Blue lasers aren't cheap and the format is still up in the air. Maybe next summer when PS3 comes out there will be an agreed upon format. Still, it's going to give Sony problems when they try and price it competitively. I can see that being a big selling point in a couple of years, but not immediately. By that I mean most people wont really care at this point (geeks and videophiles obviously will).

Why? It doesn't have to run multiple programs and OS processes like a standard computer. 512 should be more than enough for anything you would do on it.

goodbye pc gaming!

Isn't that what people said when XBox came out?

That's what people have said when every recent console has come out. :p I sure won't be giving up on PC gaming, anyways. Although if they really can cram all of that into a $299 box, I may have to get one anyway (assuming there are any games out that interest me). :)

That should be plenty. The PS2 has 32MB main RAM and 4 MB VRAM.

The original idea was 256. The move to 512 is probably plenty given that the first XBOX only had 64. Tons more horsepower and 8x the memory of the XBOX.
