Xbox 360 headset audio problem

I can talk through the microphone, but the sound does not come through the headset speakers. For some reason, all sound from people in xbox live play through the tv speakers.
 
I'm not familiar with this headset, what kind of connections does it have?

Do you have to take the audio output from the Xbox and hook it up to your headset instead of the TV?
 
it connects directly into the wireless controller. There are no options to hook up an audio cable to them.

There are settings to change where you want the audio from the headset to be played back (in the headset, on the TV, or both).
