Yes, technology wise they are behind xbox and gamecube because they came out early... but partially thanks to coming out early, they're also the most popular.

Consoles do not surpass PCs when they launch, they catch up.

Imagine PC evolution as a straight diagonal line - a steady, methodical march in one direction.

Then imagine console evolution as a stairstep - a big jump every 3 to 5 years followed by unchanging circumstances.

does anyone realize that, despite consoles' graphical power, they still can't do half the things PC's can, and that is their limitation. i don't see anyone posting here from an Xbox or ps2!

I've always heard Sony and MS lost money on every unit sold and maid their money back and more from selling extra hardware and games for it. Don't know about Nintendo and their GC. Also if UT2k7 looks that good and plays as good as UT2k4 now I cannot wait. Don't care if its a new engine or just better modeling/textures I want it.

Which thread? You'll have to specify, there are hundreds if not thousands of others about the same exact thing.

It's kinda funny, M$ & Sony sell consoles at a loss to try to eek out a bit of profit over one another a few years down the road... know who's making out like bandits though? Tide. Every time someone says the word "xbox", hundreds of little kids ejaculate in their pants, which they then of course have to wash

Btw, malak, why the name change?

Felt like a change. It's more or less the same name.

Most people buy consoles to play games, and they probably have a Dell computer with intel Extremely Slow Graphic other stuffs. I'm afraid that the cost of making games for the PC will be too much for many game developers. It took id and valve a long time to develop games like Doom III and HL2. In term of number game of sales, console games usually win. In term of hardware, the PC will eventually surpass the xbox 360. But it seem to me, we have to buy a new videocard that can cost more than a console almost on the yearly basis, not mentioning new CPUs, to enjoy handful of games like Far Cry, Doom III, Rome Total War, and HL2 in 2004. I haven't seen a PC game that's worth playing in 2005.

 You also think Alienware is where it's at for gaming? Every 3-5 years is much more accurate. As we approach photorealism it may grow longer.

You need to upgrade a video card much sooner than that. 2 years at most. And Alienware makes sexcellent gaming rigs.

You absolutely don't. A video card can perform at console or higher settings for 3-5 years. What PC enthusiasts do and what is necessary to outpace consoles are two different things. Alienware PCs are fine, if excruciatingly ugly. I'm referring to the $1k+ markup on them, not their quality.

No, not with 720p and a total of 512 MB shared memory.

So you're saying the games cannot look more photorealistic? Seems to me you're too concerned about insane resolution than little things such as:

# Rigid body dynamics
# Universal collision detection
# Finite element analysis
# Soft body dynamics
# Fluid dynamics
# Hair simulation
# Clothing simulation

...and I did see 1080i support...

Other than sheer resolution the games should look better and thus surpass PC games for a short period of time.

This isn't about PC video cards outpacing consoles, it's about PC games requiring a newer video card every 2 years, compared to a console you upgrade every 3-4 years at half the price. A video card that was high-end 3 years ago cannot run new games at highest details today, you need a new video card. Every 2 years, at the latest, you'll need to upgrade to keep up with PC games. On a console you don't have to worry about upgrading. It's both good and bad. Consoles can start better than PC's for gaming(lack of overhead helps), but since they don't upgrade they eventually aren't as good as PC's.

Patently false, the ti4600 came out in late '01, I bought it in mid '02. It can run FC in 10x7 v.high detail, Doom3 in 12x10 med detail or 10x7 high detail. I'm guessint it has another year before it can't play new games at (chronologically competing; ie. ps2, xbox1) console settings (low detail, 640x480).
