This is terrible news for those of us who value quality. Manufacturers will look at this and think we don't care about quality hardware. It's already happening in the PC-hardware space where Acer, producer of shitty and unreliable Windows PC, is now the #2 producer of personal computers. It's like a race to the bottom and people are merrily tagging along. I will never go that route.

MS had to write off over a billion dollars to cover warranty repairs. I highly doubt this situation is going to be encouraging anyone to follow suit. There are always going to be cheap products with people willing to buy, but again the 360 is in class by itself. The hardware debacle has been costly for MS.

I think what some people fail to understand is that this wasn't poor quality as a result of cost cutting, it was poor quality as a result of a faulty design that was not discovered until it was too late.

The former is something that other companies might repeat to be competitive, the latter is not something anyone would choose to repeat.

It is peculiar that someone who claims to care so much about quality could end up being a Sony fanboy.

If it was poor design how come that design was never changed? It boggles the mind how poor design can have such a long shelf life.

And I am not a 'Sony fanboy'. The only Sony products I have in my home are the PS3, PS2, PSP and a headphone. They all work but you won't see me defending them incessantly. Just because I rag on the shitty XBOX 360 hardware doesn't mean I am a fan of a competing product. I just don't like shitty products.

umm dude, the ps2 came out in 2000.

the one you bought 3 years later was not one of the first batch ps2s...

Amusingly enough, Sony had already been sued for the Disc Read Error (DRE) malfunction BEFORE Dari even bought his PS2.

Wiki Link

"A class action lawsuit was filed against Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. on July 16, 2002, in the Superior Court of California, County of San Mateo. The lawsuit addresses consumer reports of inappropriate "no disc error" (disc read error) messages and other problems associated with playing DVDs and CDs on the Sony PlayStation 2."

From my understanding Costco has one of the best return policies in the industry. Glad to hear about yours!

Yes they do. Costco sells their consoles as bundles. The bundles come with stuff you'd likely want (a controller, play & charge kit and/or a GOOD game), and they're sold at a price that's just slightly below MSRP for everything you get. Not a good discount but it essentially gives you the advantages of another store's paid product replacement plan for free. You bring the console back, they check it out, they give you back your money. Then you go buy a new 360. I believe Costco then deals with Microsoft to get credit for the broken Xbox.

I agree with you but the free part can be debated because you have to pay an annual membership fee to shop at Costco.

However, I buy a ton of stuff there which more than makes up for the cost. Plus if you get the Executive Membership you get a percentage of your annual spending back. Which in the past (for me at least) has more than paid for the cost of membership

By the way I am planning on ordering the 250GB Call of Duty special edition XBox with my Costco Cash Card since it is the exact amount I got back from my 20GB Pro bundle I returned :)

That's standard fare for those plans. When I worked at Circuit City, that was my big selling point for RPP - if it breaks, you get the original purchase price, and since the price of consoles inevitably goes down, that's a pretty good value.

Wish my 360 had this PRP as it just RRODed. My son is crushed as it was his 360. Fortunately I have another in the house (mine) so I moved it to his room so he can play.

It's still covered under the RROD warranty according to the MS site so I will get it shipped off on Monday and start the waiting game.

I don't get why people make such a big deal out of warranties and faulty hardware. So the damn thing breaks down on you... so what? Go on ebay and buy a repair kit. or just read the fix guide on some forum. The info is always out there!

I never pay for extended warranties when it comes to electronics with the exception of maybe TVs. Everything else, I fix or throw out when it breaks down. Warranties are too expensive - I rather fix my things myself and learn something new in the process.
