:( Xbox 360 DOA

Just got home with my new xbox 360 pro. Got it all hooked up in my entertainment center, ran the cables, tied them up and made it all neat, provisioned an IP address on the router, turned the unit on and went through the setup, opened Street Fighter IV and low and behold, the damn DVD drive doesn't work. It responds to open/close commands, but doesn't recognize any disks in the drive. I've tried games, DVD's and CD's all with no difference.

So now, I have to unhook everything, undo my cabling job, pack up the system and take it back and fight to get my money back as it was the last one they had. Also have to fight to get my money back on the game. I have no confidence in Xbox now. I had an original Xbox that died on me a year and month after I got it.

I'm just pissed and ranting as all I wanted to do tonight was play some Street Fighter IV.

Anyone else have this kind of luck, or know a fix for this?

I'm going to, but it was the last one they had, unless I want to shell out more money and get the elite for $100 more, which i'm not going to spend on a console.

Dude, this ain't 3 years ago. The pro is everywhere now, and unless you've moved & didn't update your profile, you damn sure won't have any problems finding one. There must be a Gamestop every other mile in your area, and then there's Walmart, or Target, or Sears, or Best Buy, if you happen to have a thing against them. I could keep going, but I'm sure you get my point.

Yeah, it sucks, but shit happens. At least you're in an area where it's pretty easy to fix.

If you are worried about the next one breaking, then you should get the next one at Costco. They have 5 stores within 20 miles of your profile, and their return policy is second to none. Be sure and call before you go though, as their supply runs out fairly quick here, but they get them in regularly.

In fact, you should call wherever you decide to get the next one. Your luck sucks!:p

Return it, get your money back, wait until Dell has another sale on the Arcade unit for $160 and buy that as it's probably a Jasper. Get a hard drive for $25-30 and enjoy SF4.

As for a fix, it depends.

I've fixed ones that just need a laser cleaning. Open the xbox up, take out the drive, take the drive apart, and take a q-tip with rubbing alcohol and clean the laser off.

In Hitachi drives, I have fixed a problem where the laser doesn't know where it's at and needs a spacer. The laser slides up and down on two rails, and theres a switch on the side closest to the front of the drive, and also a little white plastic piece on the laser itself to hit that switch. All you do is cut a little piece of foam out and superglue it to the little white plastic piece and it hits the switch earlier, which fixes the drive and puts the laser in the position it's supposed to be. It's really the strangest fix I've seen

I've also seen drives that the motor had been sitting and collected too much dust so it wasn't spinning right, just put WD40 on the motor and it worked fine.

And then I've had drives where I outright had to replace the whole drive unit, which requires opening, hooking the old drive up to your computer, ripping off the old firmware, and writing the old firmware onto the new drive.

So really, it's either take it back or warranty unless you want to do some surgery.

wtf why is this such a big deal?

unhook your stuff, return it to store and get money back since its the last one, and buy it elsewhere.

it's not like 360's are hard to find.

worst rant ever...

Yes, the first thing I do when I find out something I JUST bought is defective is post on a message board. Are you starving for attention? Go back to the store, get your money back and buy it somewhere else like a normal person would. You shouldn't need to go looking for advise for something like this.

Yeah, what's so hard about returning and buying it at another store?

BTW, my xbox dvd drive died as well, but that was after about half a year of use. Their return/replacement process is pretty hassle free and quick.

My DVD drive went out as well after 10 months. Pretty painless exchange, took about two weeks.

The rant is that I bought something new that didn't work. And to add to it, #2 and #3 unit didn't work either. After going through the ringer 3 times I finally got a system that worked.
XBox #1 bad DVD drive
XBox #2 Bad NIC
XBox #3 no power.
XBox #4 works fine.

I've heard the XBox has a high failure rate, but to get 3 in a row that are bad, from different stores no less must be a record.

Are you buying these used or refurbished? I would avoid that retailer like the plague as if they are new maybe they have a storage/handling issue (ie someone playing soccer with the boxes in the back)
Have 2 xbox 360s and work right out of the box going on 2-3 years for the first at 1-2 years on the second. Both purchased online.
Have about 10 close family/friends all have xboxes and no such issues (2 years of ownership).
Maybe I'm unlucky, and your unlucky, but that is not the norm. I have received DOA equipment, latest Samsung Blu-Ray Player, but shipped it back and got another one.

Power / electrical issues in your house / apartment maybe? The odds of getting 3 brand new Xboxes from different retailers each with hardware failures seems awfully unlikely.

i think no big deal....

since that's the last one in the store.. so maybe that's leftover, so the quality is bad..

return that then.
