At least he gets a new warranty rather than being stuck with a refurb unit @ 90-day warranty with possibly a higher chance of failure.

$400 - difference is still cheaper than a brand new 360.

From reports I've seen on gaming communities, the refurbs are very iffy--it turns into an endless cycle of replacements.

Your best bet is probably to start over from scratch and get a protection plan.

Does the change in warranty affect gaming consoles?

according to this article, it only effects televisions, computers, cameras, camcorders, portable music players and cell phones but i wouldnt be surprised if they extended it to encompass all electronics.

I paid $50 for my Xbox 360 ($200 Microcenter sale + Sony $150 Visa).

i'd claim that the defect was actually their crappy design, and it was defective as manufactured. that way, the warranty was breached when they sold it to you. you then have 3 years (depending on the statute of limitations in your state) to sue them for it.

file a claim in small claims court.

You're missing something big here. If he sells his original XBox 360 AND pays for repairs on it first, he's not making any difference.

In the long run, not only has he paid for TWO 360's, he's also paid to repair one. That's completely stupid. by this point we're talking damn near a grand just for a lousy game console.

He'd be better off buying a bare unit from ebay. The cost would be rougly the same as the repairs itself. He could probably recoup most of the cost from selling his old one on ebay as a non-working unit, too.

If he's going to sell it on ebay as non-working, that might be incentive enough to go ahead and try and fix it himself. There's gotta be a guide out there somewhere that can explain how to do it.

And I was referring to the idea being stupid, not you. Stop being a baby.

This is why I've never understood why people buy consoles when they first launch.

1. The majority of them break in a short period of time (I don't know anybody who had a launch Xbox or Playstation 1 or 2 that didn't break within a year).

2. They are very expensive

3. There is a very small selection of games

The issue with the Xbox 360 Ring of Death is that there can be any number of issues wrong with it. Usually it's an issue with cold solder joints, or the console just getting too hot and it starts as freezing.

There's no real solution to fixing cold solder joints on the BGA chips unless you feel either extremely daring(heat gun method :evil: ), or have access to expensive BGA hot-air rework equipment.
