XBOX 360 Deal

I think the main "catch" in this case is that it's a refurb. It says that it's supported by Geeks, so you have to wonder about the warranty.

Xbox 360 arcade for $169.99 at Dell

I would rather have this personally. If you buy an Arcade, microsoft has an upgrade to a 20GB and 3 months free Xbox Live gold for $30.

I would go for this, too.

With a refurb unit, you have a high probability of getting an older chipset, which means a higher chance of getting an RRoD... which means you're SOL because the unit probably isn't covered by MS's 3-year warranty if it's a refurb.

If you literally cannot afford a little extra money to buy a new unit, then you might want to reconsider buying the system at all.

If only the darn thing had integrated wireless, then this would be an awesome deal for not only a console, but a media extender.

As it is, it's close - but not enough for me to bite and get another 360. (I got in on the $299 Falcon Elite from Dell last year, no regrets on that!)

RROD does suck, but I would prefer an old 360. Refurbs do get a burn in test at refurb centers. Some are more honest than others.

Keep in mind the new arcades have lite-on drives and you cannot flash the DVD firmware if you ever plan on modding the console. With the old units they have windows based gui flashers that are so easy to use a 1st grader can do it.

considering that refurbs have to use the same model chips... it means they WILL get the RROD again... they can't just go ahead and mix new and old hardware, it doesn't work that way. Which is why some people have gone through 3 or 4 RRODs, because MS keeps on shipping people are refurbish of the same exact model you bought.

Does it really matter if its refurb, I mean with the chances of you getting RROD I don't really mind a cheaper refurb one either?

What do you guys think

Buy a new one.

hell even te new ones with hdmi rrod just as bad, ms has yet to fix any of them as of yet because the cut back the lead they used in the solder balls to attach the chips to the boards with, and as time and heat passes on they all start to pull away from the boards. Id buy the refurb over the new, and then take what you saved over new and put into one long ass extended warranty. If it rrod you get a new one, and it will cover it till the xb 720 comes out and you'd be selling the old pos by then 🙂

OH and feel free to check fleebay to see all the hdmi and non hdmi units being sold for $50 a pop. They are everywhere.

I'm not seeing this 20gb/3 months live upgrade for $30? I just saw a 60gb one which is more expensive

That deal from MS expired 1/31. Look for a deal on a 60 GB Pro at $299 list instead.

Alleged / unproven failure rates:
1. original 90nm CPU, GPU - no HDMI - over 40%
2. Zephyr 90nm new heatsink - HDMI - 30%
3. Falcon (mid-2007) 65nm CPU, 80nm GPU - 10%
4. Jasper (late 2008) 65nm CPU, 65nm GPU - ?? % - uses 20 watts less, probably lower than 10% failure

What are the chances? Pretty high, actually. It's worth spending the extra $40 on a new arcade.

On the other hand, an older Xbox 360 has a higher chance of not having a Lite-On DVD drive. If you're going to flash the drive to work with backups, all previous drives (Samsung, Hitachi, Benq) can be modified using nothing more than a computer and a bootable CD / thumb drive. Lite-On drives require extra hardware to extract the drive key.

Refurbished = fancy name for used. If there is one thing in this world that one should never buy used,Its an Xbox 360.

I'd say condom > toothbrush > xbox 360, but yeah.
