Xbox 360 controller not working.

My friend has a basic microsoft wired Xbox 360 controller that he wants to use on his PC. He plugged it in, and didnt even hear the sounds you usually hear when plugging in something to the USB. He installed the Xbox 360 driver software, but when he tried to open it, nothing happened. Nothing is showing up in the "Devices & Printers" window, and the "HID compliant game controller" option isnt showing up anywhere. If someone knows how to fix this, or point me to another thread with this problem, it would be much appreciated.

You shouldn't need any software.

Once you plug it in, do you get the 'found new hardware' where it asks if you want to search for a driver?

Go through the prompts, and then there is a Microsoft Common Controller for 360 (or something like that). Choose that, and everything should work.
