how does this thing work? I guess it plugs in by USB, but do you get to program the buttons yourself? Is it powered by USB or do I need to stock up on a few more rechargable AA's? Does it work in PC games like call of duty 2, or PC only games? How can you tell a game supports gamepads? any owners want to comment on it? I was wondering and thinking of buying since a controller would be pretty fun.

You can get the driver from Microsoft. As secretanchitman said, only the wired one works. If by "program the buttons" you mean "assign them to functions in games on my own", then yes, you get to. I imagine it'd work well for lots of games, if a game supports a joystick, you can usually use a gamepad for it. I've played NFSMW, HaloPC and TR:L with the 360 pad on my PC. Granted those are all Xbox/360 games, but still ;)

As stated above, only the wired version works. You can buy the official Xbox 360 controller for pc, or you can just buy a wired Xbox 360 controller. The only difference is that with the former, it comes with a driver, and with the latter, you need to download the driver.

The Xbox 360 controller has been called the best PC controller in existence by many. I suggest you try it out if you have games that will benefit from using a controller.

I've been using my 360 wired gamepad (the Mad Catz one) with epsxe, and it's just amazing. I highly, highly recommend it. It'll easily be the best supported controller by DirectX in the future, too - apparently the DirectInput stuff is now using that as the baseline controller to test with.
