Xbox 360 $299 no hard drive

Text

Microsoft Corp. said its next-generation Xbox 360 game console would cost $299 to $399 when the device is launched this holiday season.

The $299 version will come with a wired controller, but will not have the 20-gigabyte hard-disc drive, wireless controller, headset, Ethernet cable and wireless television remote control included in the $399 version.

Sony Corp., which said it would launch PlayStation 3 in the spring, has not released a price for its new console.

"This will put pressure on Sony come holiday of 2007 because by then Microsoft will cut their premium price to $299 or below, while the PS3 will still be north of $399," said P.J. McNealey, an analyst at American Technology Research. Meanwhile, Nintendo Co. cut $20 off the price of its Dual Screen hand-held console to $129.99.

That sucks. :Q

You're certainly not living up to your user name ;)

I dunno, maybe Ill get the base. I really only want the headset, controller, & remote. 20gb for saved games? Over the top IMO and Im never going to use it.

maybe you can just buy the non-hd xbox and if you change your mind, you can buy the microsoft 20gb hd upgrade for about $80 (or however much they decide to charge you)

20gb hard drive? What the hell is that? They are definitely making money from the $399 pack. Is a small hdd, wireless controller, a cheap headset, a remote control, and ethernet cable worth $100? Very doubtful.

Its a good move by MS. They'll have a big headstart on Sony/Nintendo, so they can charge moe...and people will pay.

Probably exactly what they were thinking.

So even if you opt for the cheaper model... you'll still have to buy a $30 memory card.

Wonder if they will sell kits to turn to the 299 version into the 399. That would be a smart move, or else the 299 ones will fail once all the used ones hit stores.

I must get the upgraded one. The wife allowed me to pre-order as long she can still rip CDs and such to it. :D

Can't you just buy the $299 version and throw in a cheap 4 - 8GB drive in it? Those HDDs gotta be cheap...

Hmm this is tough. The only real accessories I want are the HD, XBox Live Communicator, and the wireless controller. I don't care for the remote or the ethernet cable either. So if the HD, Wireless Controller, and communicator total up to under $100 on their own, then I'm not going to get the bundle one.

I wonder how this will affect us if we pre-ordered the xbox360. I'm going to go to gamestop this weekend and ask them if we choose now which version we want, or if we will just choose when we pick them up.

wow look at this link with much more information ...

http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/08/17/news_6131245.html

it gives specifics on the prices of the peripherals. The 20gb HD itself will retail for $99

looks like I'm going to just get the bundle heh.

EDIT: and it also looks like the $399 system will come w/the HD AV pack, which is a must for me. so yea, i'm definnitely getting that one. (initially the core system was supposed to come w/the HD AV pack, but looks like that changed).

I only want the remote as extra because it is basically a media machine now... the other extras I don't care for. I sure as hell am not going to pay $100 more for it. :|

Isn't the HD pack supposed to be only $20 anyway ? How are they listing it for $40 ?

Don't bet on it.

Betcha MS cooked up something like a crazy interface to prevent you from just putting your own HD in. Maybe in time someone wil figure it out, but it won't be right away. Don't forget this time MS had lots of time to put this system together, not like last time where they just slapped some PC components together.

The accessory prices are insane. $99 for a HDD? $99 for a cheap wireless adapter?

Suggested retail price of 64mb memory card - $39.99
Suggested retail price of hard drive - $99.99

If you had to have a Xbox360, you'd be a fool to buy the "Core" edition.

Gotta agree. I'll just run an ethernet cable down from my office before I spend $99 on a wireless adaptor.

Michael Pachter, of Wedbush Morgan Securities, wasn't as cheerful. He sees the $299 model as a "publicity stunt." "They're doing it to say they are launching at $299. The hardcore guys will absolutely not buy the $299 model...Only a complete idiot would buy the $299 model."
so he's saying anyone who's not a hardcore gamer is a complete idiot. Nice quote.

I'd have to agree with him. Anyone who buys the $299 model is an idiot and getting ripped off. You'd still have to spend money on a memory card. That's an additional $40 right there for just one.

Who in their right mind would spend $340 on a console, memory card, and wired controller when you can get the console, hard drive, wireless controller, headset, high-def AV cables, and media remote for $399?

This does seem like a ploy just for MS to say they are launching a next-gen console at $299.
