Ok, so now I am confused. I bought the official VGA cable for the 360 and tested it. My test included playing a scene from my X-Men 3 DVD using my old component cables and then playing the same scene using the VGA cable. It looked exactly the same. Why is this the case?
Did you set the resolution to 1080p?

On the 360? I looked for that option and the only thing I saw was setting the resolution to 1920 x 1080 as well as selecting Expanded Mode. I also tried the default mode (forgot the name) with 1920 x 1080. Is there more to it than that? What am I missing? I remember being able to select 1080p as a setting with my component cables at one point but I didn't see that with the VGA cable hooked up.

Setting it to 1920x1080 is the same as setting it to 1080P.

If you don't notice a difference between component and VGA 1080P then take it back.

Even though the component cable limits the 360 output to 480P, the TV still must take the signal and upscale it to 1920x1080. It's very dependent on the scaler inside your TV wether or not you'll see a noticeable difference. Some quick searching seems to suggest that the scaler in your sony is top notch.

I am still confused. I know my Sony's scaler is very good. Doesn't that mean I should see a very noticeable difference between my DVDs being upscaled to 1080p as opposed to 480p? It seriously looked identical.

Because for film based sources 1080i is exactly the same as 1080p. There is no difference between the two.

-edit-
nevermind, I thought it was 1080i component vs 1080p VGA which would indeed be identical.

Look, you troll, the 360 can only output 480p over component. No one is talking about 1080i. You can get off your stupid rampage about how 1080i60 == 1080p30. It is NOT RELEVANT TO THIS TOPIC. GO AWAY!

No. Remember, if the TV gets a 480P signal output from the 360, the scaler in the TV gets it and upscales it to 1080P. The same thing happens in the 360 internally with DVD's. There's only 480 lines of information on a DVD, and the 360's internal scaler upscales it to 1080P. If the scaler in your TV is at least equivalent to the scaler in the 360, the image will be very close.

If you don't notice a big difference in image quality between component and VGA with games, return the VGA cable. Obviously, your scaler in your TV is going to negate any benefits of the 360's scaler.

Ok, that makes more sense. I did not test the VGA cable with games and I already returned it at this point. That's ok though. I only bought it because I thought I was going to see a big difference with the upscaling of my DVD movies and for $40 I figured I can't go wrong. Everything looks great regardless. 🙂
