What do you mean why? For the same reason I dumped PSX when I bought PS2. Kill two birds with one stone: sell old console to recuperate some of the cost, and to eliminate clutter.

So that would be a deal breaker? What, you're going to get like $50 for your old XBox? Is it that big of a deal? So $50 and having two consoles instead of one would be a dealbreaker? I agree it would be nice if it were to be backwards compatible, but I definitely wouldn't consider it anywhere close to being a dealbreaker if it wasn't. But that's just me.

God do I hope they do NOT do this, although I'm sure Microsoft will. I really don't think this is a good thing to do for the console industry. Consoles are great because of the standardization. Multiple choices will confuse the consumer and lengthen development cycles. I hate Microsoft for even thinking of doing this. :|

well said. Consoles's MAIN advantage is that the hardware is fixed and known. If they do this, that takes away from one of their main strengths.
 
I really am lookin forward to this years e3. no doubt microsoft will go in with a lot at stake with a supposed holiday release and the current xbox finally getting popular over the last year and a half. lets not hope they jump in to fast since sony is finnaly in sight.

Backwards compat is a must with halo2, doa ultimate, and kotor II just releasing, also the HDD should stay out to bring the down the cost next gen gfx will require.

On that subject whos makin the gpu? Since its not nvidia this time.

But i am mainly intrested in sonys ps3 and its cell processor. i want to see if it has realized its potential or not. If the latter expect a massive delay as they NEED to beat the Xbox 2's graphic capibilities since thats the reason devs like tecmo got abord xbox. Its also one reason it has become so popular.

XBox2- ATi
PS3- nVidia

Between Cell and nV's next gen part, it looks like the PS3 should rather easily have the most powerful hardware next gen. Not that that alone will make a big difference of course.

I would think this will be standard on atleast the XBOX2 and PS3. Not so sure about the new Nintendo console, as Nintendo think they know what customers want when they have no idea (cough cough online play cough cough).

hardly - The big N is one of the only game companies to consistently turn a profit. Just because their market share might not be the biggest, doesn't mean they are all of the sudden going to roll over and die.

hardly - The big N is one of the only game companies to consistently turn a profit. Just because their market share might not be the biggest, doesn't mean they are all of the sudden going to roll over and die.

I never said they were going to roll over and die, I'm just saying that they are in last place when it comes to consoles, and that's not a good thing. If you follow console gaming at all, Nintendo is slowing alienating itself from the core gaming audience. Now, I'm not saying Nintendo is for kids, as it surely isn't, but they just don't have vision to cater to the average gamer at 29 years old now. And I would really like some proof on your saying that Nintendo is "one of the only" game companies to turn a profit. Sounds like you are making sh!t up.
 
Did I misread this or what? They merely speculated that they MIGHT reveal SOMETHING (read: not the actual console) at E3 because they did it for Xbox. Microsoft hasn't even acknowledged that it exists yet. I'll believe it when I see it.

This has been fairly common knowledge for quite some time.

Also, a fairly reliable source has released some of the initial info on the systems.

Gamespy - Seems in line with most of the reasonable rumours that have been going around. With Sony presenting the PS3 next week to I believe major shareholders, I would suspect we'll know it's spec fairly soon.

Even if you're a Sony fanboy, you have to like the news XBOX is coming this year. If nothing else, it forces Sony to speed up things a bit. I think you'll see less delay between Jap. release and US release.
 
Sigh... its always been a dream of mine to go to E3. I wish I could make it happend, but I have college and a fulltime job. One of these days, I just might make the trip....

I wouldn't say that Nintendo doesn't have vision, because frankly they've been one of the most innovative game developers ever. While they recently haven't come out with something quite as earth shattering as some of their past games (e.g. mario 64, although a case could be made for the effective portrayal of character emotion in windwaker), that doesn't mean that they've ceased being innovative. One needs only to look at the direction they're pushing the handheld market in with the DS to see some fairly innovative ideas.

And I'm hardly "making sh!t up" regarding Nintendo's profitability. Last I heard, they actually made money on hardware sales (something which nobody else has matched AFAIK), and when software is added on that equals a clear profit. Nintendo has had only 1 time that they have not posted a profit in their companies history, as seen here, and that was due to a weak currency conversion rate supposedly. It's common knowledge that microsoft is bleeding cash due to the XBox, and Sony is having huge hardware reliability issues with the slim PS2s (that being said, their game division does make money, but the rest of their company is well in the red).
Also note that I said "consistently turn a profit". I'd say having only one loss in a 100 year history is a sign of a healthy business.

If having a small market share was an indication of a companies future in their respective market, Apple would have folded long ago. Don't count N out, and don't make up some BS like saying E3 is going to be make or break for Nintendo.
 
I personally think that Microsoft should come out with two different versions of the Xbox 360. I mean there are two types of people that are going to buy this system. Casual gamers and hardcore gamers. The casual gamer probably isn't going to be interested in dishing out more cash for an internal hard drive whereas the die hards will be willing to sell their souls for it. I am really hoping (and praying for that matter) that Xbox 360 has some type of internal memory unit so that I don't have to spend a small fortune on memory cards or an external hard drive. A console with no hard drive could possibly destroy any chance of games having downloadable content. Average Joe isn't going to dish out $600-$700 when they only play Madden 2006 for kicks...I don't think (and really hope) that people with money are going to buy something that cost that much when they play it for a maximum of 15 minutes every other 2 weeks. Now, I do save myself from criticism by saying that the little rich kids that have mummy or daddy buy it for them will probably buy this system regardless of the price tag...even though they will know nothing on the systems true potential. yeah, that gets agitates me, but it's gonna happen. But for people that plan on buying Halo 2.5 and Halo 3, an internal hard drive is a NECESSITY! Microsoft does not need to base their hard drive decision on Sony's new consoles capabilities or Sonys decision to insert an internal hard drive into their machine. As long as the Xbox is released before the PS3, Xbox will run the market for years to come...and I can't wait for it.

Contact MS, they have been really good about repairing or replacing Xbox's at little or no cost.
 
I think that it will be interesting to see if the newest console battle takes place in the hand held genre or if the super powers continue to battle with home consoles...with everything getting smaller and going wireless (WIFI) it will be interesting to see which areas of gaming the super powers focus on in the end. I think before too much longer, the handheld gaming world is going to explode with tons of new fans. People will be more concerned with carrying around their PSP than playing their console at home. Then again, I could be wrong...I've always preferred the larger screen and comfort within the privacy of my home, but it seems that the new fad is small wireless devices so I guess that time will only tell...
