it says to beat this guy you have to unlock the game... like a joke. so as soon as hes like half dead the demo ends.. same for me.

Maybe my wife kept hitting buttons and made that screen go away before I could see it.

It did make me want to buy the game to keep playing. 😛

LOL How did y'all miss the black furry looking guy creep up on the screen about mid-way through the boss fight? There's also a rope that drops down and the furry guy pulls the curtain down so-to-speak to end the demo.

Fantastic beat-em up game. Very enjoyable and the hand-drawn graphics are gorgeous. Sound like it is selling very well too

Resident House of the Hominid fangirl named in the friggin' game credits spoke to lead designer Dan "Defecating Forest Creatures" Paladin who kindly informed Destructoid that they have already sold over 35,000 units, outselling Braid and possibly Penny Arcade Adventures on its first day (to be confirmed over heavy drinking and screaming this weekend). Despite some kinks golf claps are definitely in order!

My roommate and I got the full version and started playing it yesterday. Got about 6 or 7 stages done. Very fun.

I can't wait to try this out w/ 4 ppl. The graphics are excellent, frame rates are smooth, fun factor is high, and some bosses are hard (in a challenging way, not annoying way).

Played the demo, it was fun, I'm in need of some side scrolling button mashing, I think I'm going to buy it.

Just put in over 5 hours straight into this game. My brother's fiance was away for the night, and my sister-in-law was in town, so my wife was occupied with her, so my brother and I both bought the game and trekked through it. I didn't expect it to be quite as long as it was, but we had a lot of fun. We tried to get Joph in on the action midway through, but neither of us could get connected to one another. Would've been nice to have a third crasher with us.

Both my brother and I got up to level 22 by the time we beat the game. I was severly disappointed in the amount of combos you unlock. I think out of those 22 levels, we only unlocked 4 or 5 combos. However, it's obvious that this game is meant to be played multiple times. I like the insane amount of weapons to unlock, although I'm not quite sure what we were doing to unlock them. Out of the huge tunnel that holds all the weapons you've gotten, we still had a shitload of space left for multiple weapons. I'm assuming the whole room will line up with weapons.

I also liked the idea of the little animals that follow you around, but they are too big and get in the way of the action sometimes. I thought it was annoying, though, that when you found a new weapon or assitance animal, it simply tells you to visit someone to find out what it does. Why not just tell me right then and there? It's pointless to make you go all the way back on the map and walk into a certain level to find out.

With the two of us, we didn't have too much trouble. I liked the idea of how they implemented reviving your partner, but sometimes it was nearly impossible with just one person trying to hold back enemies while doing the 5 second process to revive someone. Plus, you can't cancel out of the revive process, so if you're starting to get attacked, tough luck, you have to take the hit. It also sucked that if your partner goes down, it didn't matter if you had potions left to use. Typically, it will use a potion automatically if you die, but if your partner is dead and you die, it's game over, no matter if you have a potion.

The last boss was a bit of a bitch too, but it was fun. Wasn't quite what we were expecting. I'll just say to those who fight the last boss, make sure you look for his weapon right after you kill him, because it only gives you about 3 seconds to grab it before it moves on. Oh, and the ending was also fun and unexpected, and completely fucked up depending on what you do..... 🙂

I'll definitely be playing this again a few times to try and find some more weapons and animals, and to also level up my character a bit more. I loved the combos, and I want some more.

I've played through twice due to a game bug.

I have two 360's. One upstairs one downstairs. I bought the game on the downstairs box and played through to level 38 and beat the game. I then took the HDD upstairs and was going to play later that night. However, when the game started all my progress was lost but I still had my achievements.

Pretty pissed about the bug, I reluctantly started a new game and got up to level 16. I came back the next day and all my progress was gone AGAIN.

Turns out there is a bug if you buy the game on one box and try and play it on another. Their QA staff should be embarassed this slipt out but I have a feeling there isn't a QA team and the coders are testing their own code.

Anyways. There is a workaround to get your game save back. Start Castle Crashers from Arcade. When the main menu comes up, pull up the xbox menu and logout of your live account. Exit the xbox menu and go back to the game menu. start a game and it will make you login in. Voila, your save is back.

On a side note: My favorite Knight is the Poison Knight. He gets a cloud DOT that is great for taking out all enemies including bosses. You can easily put all stat points into magic from the get go and once magic is maxed out but points in the other stats. The cloud DOT gets a huge range and does 20 a tick. The Knight also gets a poison DD bolt that ticks higher then the Poison cloud.

So Rage, do you know if weapons and animals are random, or are most of them hidden? I still have a ton of space for weapons and animals at the blacksmith.

I played quite a bit last night with a friend via online co-op. We got to levels 18 & 21, but I'm seriously regretting my choice of Blue Knight. My friend was Red and was shocking a whole line of people for incredible amounts of damage and I managed to freeze one or two guys at a time. Guess who was level 18? 😛

Sorry to hear some of you guys (blurred & Joph) are having connection problems. It seems like the game is fairly buggy, as my friend and I were booted from the game twice over the course of ~4 hours. Not terrible, but still a little annoying.

I sent you an invite, but you ignored 🙁 😛. I wish you would've said something, we could've tried to hook up with 4 players, since I was playing with my brother. We both had the red and blue knight as well.

I'm intrigued enough to go through and try to unlock everything, even possibly all the secret characters.

I told my friend with a 360 about this game and we co-op through the demo. That was enough for him to download the full game.

It has a few twists on the whole classic beat-em up with simple stat allocating RPG elements and Gauntlet like elements too. Actually, you can really think of this as a great 2d Gauntlet with a comical cartoon atmosphere (though no loud booming voice of your yellow knight needs food badly). It also is a very unique take on the "save the princess" theme as well.

Graphically, despite being 2d is very beautiful and has alot of detail especially in the caracature (sp) expressions. The only dissapointing thing is that with two people it is quite short, very short. This game with it being longer with alot more can very well be a full release game.

Oh and I love it at the end of a boss battle where you save the princess with co-op. Hehehehehehe......

Question: When someone dies in a co-op game, who's supposed to mash Y to revive the person?

Anyone can revive the person. It is more effective if you can time the Y button when the marker is in the center so the revived can have more health.

The red lightning guy is easily the twinker character of the game. Stuns and crazy magic damage. However, later on and I do mean much later, he will be worthless if he only concentrated on magic.

I am also guessing he was also quite a bitch in those "love conflict" scenes???? 😛 😛

Also, you can take away his enemies he is shocking by "airborning" enemies he has stunned. hehehehehe.

Really enjoying the single player, I'm actually surprised at how much game you get for your dollar, they could have easily released this for $20 and it'd still feel worth it. Theres a ton of stages, been playing all afternoon and I'm still not at the end.

Having a lot of trouble with the multiplayer though, can't get into a game, and when it does, it crashed my 360 both times I've tried it.

I've been playing with the blue knight and the game is starting to get a little on the absurd side of difficult (at level 26, just beat the ice guy, PAIN IN THE ASS BOSS), so maybe I should start it over.

A bit surprised the game only runs at 30fps, but for those with 120hz TVs with frame interpolation, it looks amazing at 120fps, so fluid and beautiful.

Joystiq has a really good interview with the Castle Crashers devs.

Here's the bit about an incoming patch to fix the online problems.

We've been hearing about some Castle Crashers problems where people can't connect to their friends over Xbox Live to play co-op. True, the problem could have been blown out of proportion, but there are legitimate cases of connection problems nonetheless. What are you doing to fix this?

Tom: This was something that never came up in testing and now that there are problems with the Live release we're looking into it. We had six hour play sessions and nothing ever came up.

Dan: When we went through testing, Microsoft approved all our network code and we had no problems at all. There are those things in real world scenarios that we couldn't account for. Just look at Call of Duty 4 when it came out, you couldn't play for a week straight and now it's fine.

So, you acknowledge that there are bugs that need fixing?

Tom: We have some bugs that have been fixed.

Dan: Yeah, there are certain network settings where, if you're in a very specific network environment, it won't work with another person's connection and that's what's happening. But that's something we're already addressing by working with Microsoft to get a patch out as fast as possible.

Will the patch release in a few days, a few weeks or a couple months?

Tom: We're hoping soon, as soon as possible. Though, there isn't any official time frame yet.

Dan: We're trying to get it out as soon as possible, because we know it's important to people. I've played through half the game with a friend online and it runs fine. And when it works, it runs like it's local. But there's those certain people whose connections we have problems with and that's exactly the problem we're onto. It's that certain connection where two people just don't work, but we're on it. The good news is that it'll work ... at least half the time.

On the price point:

Okay, so let's say Microsoft wasn't in the picture. What price would you set Castle Crashers at?

Dan: Personally, I'm very happy with the price. Now that it's out, we're happy with it.

Tom: Yeah, it's worth the 1200 points.

Dan: If you think about it, Alien Hominid was a retail title and this game is bigger than that. So, to pay fifteen dollars for a game that is bigger than our retail title is pretty good.

Sales

Now that Castle Crashers has been out for a few days now, have you heard about the game's sales?

Tom: We don't have official numbers, hopefully we'll be getting them soon. As far as we know we're record breaking, because we aren't sure of anyone else selling as many copies. But we have to wait for official confirmation from Microsoft.

Dan: Though, we do have leaderboard totals to go off of and the last time we check, it was at about 103,000 players.

A 103,000 players on their leaderboards in under 5 days (not sure when this interview was done) is nothing to sneeze at for an Arcade title. I also just recently realized that out of the "Summer of Arcade", I purchased 3 of the 5 titles released.

I'm level 56 now and have Magic, Str, and Defense maxed and am working on Agility.

and yes I beat the game again. The only thing I have left to beat is one arena. I have all the animals and they are always found in the same spots. Currently I use the Giraffe as it helps you level quicker. For weapon I use the end boss flaming sword. The first time I beat the game I didn't grab it so I made sure I got it this time.

Oh, and sans the save bug ths game was easily worth the $15. As some have said it is worth $20 but you only think that once you've played it for awhile.

Sorry, we were engrossed in our game and kind of towards the end of our session. I'm a bad XBL friend, just ask Joph.

Ha, nice. I might as well have been playing as a pink knight, that's how I felt doing 1/3 of the damage as my friend with the Blue Knight.

Here is a lis of all animals and their locations

The easiest place to get some decent weapons is the Marsh. You can get a Mace, a Hammer, and a glowing sword with pretty good stats. The mace is dropped by the skeletons. The hammer is in a tombstone in the background and the glowing sword is buried behind 2 buildings about halfway between them. Just keep trying to dig around the middle and you will eventually find it. It is the same buildings where one of the green guys sticks his head out of the door way.

I do Marsh/Corn Boss runs for decent xp. about 800 per run and a run takes 5-8 minutes.
