The online portion, yeah. EA runs their own servers.

Ya, EA puts that on all of their sports games. I don't know if they actually ever do or not, but it's a nice incentive to buy the next version. 😉

I'm looking to the Hawx demo. I think I read the demo had 4 player co-op in it also.

Have to try Hawx when I get home. I hear the 3v3 NHL game sucks ass. Oh well, I have NHL 09 so I'm not hurt, but a decent arcade hockey game like Midway's Hitz series would be great.

Yeah, it doesn't look good at Metacritic. I was surprised not to see any comments on it from the PSN thread last Thursday.

the HAWX demo was great. i'm anxious to see some reviews of the full game to see how varied it is. flight games tend to be extremely repetitive, but i really enjoyed the demo. the hockey demo was too short to really get a feel for it.

How does it compare to Ace Combat 6? My Xbox isn't connected to the internet yet, so no demos and what not for me.

I've played the demos for both Ace Combat 6 and HAWX, though I don't own AC6. HAWX is a lot better though, as far as I can tell. The graphics are even more stunning (if that's even possible!) and they've taken a lot of the repetitiveness out of it by adding a new camera and control system that keeps your target in view and also simplifies various maneuvers. For example, in AC6, if you want to turn around quickly, you have to roll left or right and then pull up in order to turn. Not only that, but you have to do it essentially blindly because you can't see your target unless it's in front of you. HAWX has a control mode that keeps the camera on the target and also combines the roll and pitch maneuvers into a single movement (in other words, move the stick left and you'll automatically maneuver to the left by rolling and pitching, instead of having to do it manually yourself). You can pull off some pretty impressive maneuvers with this control scheme.

But perhaps the best part (for those flight sim junkies out there) is that this control scheme is totally optional. You can quickly switch between it and your standard control scheme on the fly by double tapping either trigger. In the standard view, you still have the option of turning on a display that will guide you to your selected target - press X and a series of gates appears. Fly through them to reach difficult targets (for example, there are several tanks in the demo mission that are protected on all sides by skyscrapers. The gates lead you to a flight path that points you straight down so you can hit them with a missile).

There is also an "Expert" control scheme that claims to give you "full control" while in the new camera view. I haven't tried it but I'm guessing it removes all the assists and forces you to control the plane normally while in that view. Also, in the standard view, you can switch between third-person, first-person, and cockpit.

It's pretty cool. Definitely worth waiting for. It's too bad you don't have your Xbox connected to the Internet, since there are demos for both AC6 and HAWX available.

I ordered 30ft of ethernet cable from monoprice. Should be connected later today. 🙂

Be forewarned - I found a lot of discussions with people bitching and whining about the alternative control scheme (strangely called "assistance off" mode, even though it seems the computer assists you much more than in "assistance on" mode). It is indeed hard to figure out which way you're pointed sometimes, but the whole idea is to make complex maneuvers easier and to make sure you can always keep track of your target. But the other thing is, if you dislike it, you don't have to use it. Problem with that is that it's hard to maneuver very quickly in your standard 1st- or 3rd-person view.

Another thing - the demo doesn't let you save your data, so if you want to try the other planes (AV-8B Harrier II and Su-35 Super Flanker) you have to just play the mission multiple times without leaving the demo. The Harrier has freefall bombs and the Super Flanker has long range radar-guided missiles. Fun stuff.

I played the HAWX demo last night and enjoyed it - it's just dumbed-down enough (as opposed to a real sim) to be fun IMO. All the usual Tom Clancy polish is nice as well.

The demo is pretty fun. I don't really like the 3rd person view. I think it's cool, but I wish you could make those hard turns when in 1st person. At least, it didn't seem like I was making them until I turned "assistance" off.

I tried the FEAR demo and some other fps. Holy crap it's hard to aim.

This is being released in the full version, if you look at the Developer blog or the FAQ on their forum, they state that it was left out because they were still working on the cockpits.
