This is what I don't understand. How can people be disappointed w/ the texture quality when in some cases the game requires over 500MB of video memory for textures?

That's what I want to know? How in the hell can such low quality textures require a 500MB video card? Even set to ultra the textures don't look very good.

I personally think Half Life II will be more the revolutionary game that most people are looking forward too. Doom is not alot more than any other 3d shooter / horror survival game.

Its got alot of eye candy. Imo the lightning is the best thing about the game. The atmosphere is nice because of the lighting. The textures to me are a mixed bag. Somwhow these suposed more realistic looking textures look even less realistic. The only thing that comes to mind is shiny play dough. Not impressive at all imo. Now dont get me wrong the graphics are really nice but not realistic imo. Looking at the video of Half life 2 and seeing the stubble on the G-Mans face and watching the muscles move as he talks looks quite a bit more realisitc and impressive than what I am seeing in Doom III.

Not to mention the inability to deform the enviroment is getting old. It was ok ten years ago when Doom came out but now its just getting old. Being able to move more things, change the enviroment by blowing things up, picking up items with a gravity gun in HL 2, and other things like that just make the game a whole lot better and feel a whole lot more advanced. May be pushing some advanced modeling techniques and lighting out the yin yang but its still not as impressive as shooting a support beam thats holding up a huge crate and watching the support beam crack and buckle and watching the crate fall over and splatter all those enemys below.

Personally I look forward to the mods and the other games that will be made with the Doom engine. Id has never been huge on story or plot.

And I am not judging the game. I have not played through it yet. Just got to play a little at a friends house today. Oh and for those with Ati cards do not fret. With the 4.8 Beta drivers they had HQ (Not ultra High) and 1024 x 768 with 2x FSAA and it was running super smooth. And it looked very good. The lightning was just awesome and all the moving things in the area (Machines moving, fans spinning, etc) really was cool. The only thing he did was turn Shadows off. Which I honestly thought would somehow make the game look really bad considering the type it was and what it was trying to accomplish. But I could hardly tell the difference. It was strange. There is just that much lightning things going on that I really felt no different with shadows on or off. Although it was a little bit slower with shadows on. Oh and this is how it felt to me. I did not get any bench numbers.

As far as get it or not? I would personally rather wait and see what the multiplayer reviews (Mods, how fun it is, etc) state. Thats my ballgame and what I mostly look for in a game.

Doom 3 is really fun so far. It does exactly what it is titled, it gives you a sense of doom. I don't think I've ever been as freaked out playing any other game and that is a great plus. Just like how you sometimes want to sit down to a good scarey movie instead of an action or a comedy, Doom 3 fufills such a desire for a horror game. Granted, it would be a little more scarey if you didn't have more than able weapons to dispatch your foes, you still get creeped and and feel the sense of dread every time you hear a banging noise and you always catch your self swinging around to check that dark corner.

Graphically it is amazing, it works even suprisingly well on my Radeon 8500. I'd thought 800x600 or even 640x480 would be unbearable but it isn't, although I'm sure I'd never want to go back to it if I got used to 1600x1200 and ultra quality ;)

My major beef with the game is the fact that it is so dark. Now they could have had the excuse that after the "accident" the lights malfunction but even before hell breaks loose (literally) you find youself wishing you had a flashlight even when the building seems to be functioningly perfectly. I don't think there is a room in the game that is normally lit, ever, let alone brightly lit.

So that brings me to my other beef, since you always practically need your flash light, you'd think your character would find someway to hold a light and a gun at the same time...but not. Fortunately the light isn't as lame as Halo's or Half Life's which requires recharging when a simple battery powered light from our time (and not their advanced future) lasts several hours. Well the Doom 3 light never runs out of juice unless you're hit wiht an EMP (which provides for some of the freakest parts of the game as you're often forced to fire blindly into the dark)

To sum it up, I think the only people who would not like this game are people who don't like to be afraid.

I'll elaborate on that: the people who say the game is crap are 1) ATi fanbois or 2) HL2 fanbois. I can't find a single thing wrong with the game. The game is incredible! Incredible graphics, gameplay, story, and atmosphere. The combination of all of them contribute to an incredible experience.

What did you expect? Branching dialog with demons?

Doom Marine: Demons, I am looking for a passage to hell. I will
a) give you 50 credits for passage
b) give you 150 credits for passage
c) ask kindly and try to persuade
d) deliver texas lead enema

Hellknight: Doom Marine, I am willing to give you passage to hell for 150 credits, and 2 other conditions:
1) you do not hurt my friends
2) you do not try to destroy the cyberdemon.

This isn't HL!!! :D

Opinions are like assholes, everyones got one. Make your own.

< This asshole likes turn based strategy games best...and thinks FPS's are all generally the same... I liked serious sam's the best just cause of sheer volume of enemies..

BTW how are you guys playing this game already? I went to frys today looking for it and they said 4 o'clock tomorrow they are "allowed" to release it.

Graphically in my opinion the texture's up close don't look that great, but the models look awesome. Its simaller to the indoor levels of fry cry, but just alot more detail. You have to realize that Vavle made Half-Life 2's Charachters with a "Voice Sync" technologly, I am sure if you google it you'll find more info. I guess the game would be better to play if I had a 23" widescreen Samsung LCD and long Nvidia's SLI 6800s and a 5.1 Surround Sound System... I think that'd would get me going more than what I currently have.

BTW Avalon, the imps teleported in doom and doom2 as well. ( it was a weird orange greenish portal )

Yes, I played the two dooms when I was a little kid. I just didn't remember military zombies appearing in places I had already cleared, without triggering any sort of event. The imps don't appear in places i've already covered, just the zombies, which is weird. I honestly thought I'd be a lot more scared playing this game, but for some reason I'm not. Maybe I just need something besides imps and zombies. Cloaked pinky, anyone? :D

Doom has me more excited than any game to come out in years. After seeing the PCgamer review, its seems to be just what a game should. A ride in to a alternate universe. Lots of eye candy, and its "cool". I mean, demons, fire, guns, a upside down cruifixion.!?!. I really cant believe its out. .. ... I really hope it gives me that Run around Looking for Bullets to shoots these cool ass guns feeling, that never got old. Even though its repetitive, you keep playing till the end. Most games today I only play 1/2 of.
