As usual a great selection of benchmarks from XBit Labs.

Also my driver bug thread is listed in the review and is now famous (check out link #4 on this page).

W00T! :D

Hopefully this'll make nVidia respond quicker in fixing the bugs.

And so it should be, you did a comprehensive analysis of the drivers they were discussing while providing screenshots highlighting the issues.

I find it strange that some called the G80's driver issues minor despite X-bit reserving a whole section of their review to comment on their lackluster quality.
The current driver ? ForceWare 97.02 ? that supports the new series of graphics cards cannot be considered as stable and flawless.
...we had to reinstall the OS and some games a few times to obtain correct data and benchmark the GeForce 8800 GTX successfully, that?s why this test session took so long to get done.
What is the most annoying thing about the current driver is that the GeForce 8800 GTX may have reduced performance with it. Or the speed of the card may fluctuate too much.
I'll hold out a little longer. Hopefully they can get some nice driver versions out by Q1 07. Who knows, xS modes may be put back in? Wishful thinking I guess.

Ahaha, i posted 20 min after you. Xbitlabs well done with the benchmarks. Lots of games, and ltos of destruction.

Im impressed that the X1950XTX crossfire holds its own although it has the dual GPU advantage.
Maybe later on we can see them rebechmark with 8800GTX SLi :D

After trying the card's new AA modes I must admit they do look gorgeous and also run really fast.

Modern games like Far Cry, Quake 4 and Doom 3 look stunning at 1920x1440 with 8xQ.

Edge AA is excellent and images are really smooth and defined. 8xS might look a bit better in some cases but it's not usable at high resolutions in modern games and it also blurs the image a bit.

Also the new AF has made a positive difference to gaming as well. Not a slap-in-the-face difference but subtle and quite noticeable.

There are still a few games where I would like to have super-sampling (especially older OpenGL titles with a lot of vegetation like MOHAA) but if I don't get them I'm not that concerned anymore.

Age of Empires 3 scores seem bad for the 8800 series...

X1950XTX almost gets the same score as the 8800GTX at 1920x1200... GTS most likely will get beaten by the X1950XTX

Maybe a driver bug but i do not know, what your thoughts about this?

all i can say is that wow these cards are pretty sweet when you see the bench marks when you put into account that these things are going up against dual card setups....its really amazing if you ask me...i dont know how the new card from ati will do but wow im really impressed with the new technology

More than likely a driver bug; the drivers currently have a lot of severe performance problems.

I hope so, but i will wait for future drivers to release and hope for another site to do an AOE3 benchmark to buy a new card.

My 7800GT is doing ok (no AA) at HQ 1920x1200 all max setting but i want AA and be able to play more games that this res :) maybe in a month or two.

Looks like crossfire has bugs in their also, but the 7900GTX SLi/Quad SLi comes to a crawl for some reason. (is this another known bug?)

But the 8800GTX holds it own pretty damn well. Especially in the number of new games out like company of heros, titan quest where it destroys all of its competition (including last gen nVIDIA cards).

True, though I think it would be nice. I'm not going to base my purchase descision on whether it has the xS modes or not--hell, I've been gaming on a card that does lower MSAA samples and has no xS modes when compared to the G80. What will base my purchase decision will be the driver stablity/perfomance, and the level of bang-for-buck. Of course, the buck stops at $500 for me, no matter if it makes toast or not.

All in all, the G80's have impressed me tremendously with their capabilities--which we haven't even began to experience fully. I like how Xbit's testbed wasn't some X6800 monster setup that a lot of AMD users can't relate to. Seeing their numbers really gave me a good idea of how the GTX would do on my system. So I decided to bump it up a notch and went ahead and started getting the rig together. My Conroe stuff is in the mail so hopefully I'll get a little perfomance boost to hold me in while I wait for the GPU competition to really start. The G80 and Conroe go pretty well together and I'll notice it in other areas besides gaming.

Add the i680 chipset to the mix and you have perfection. Although of the 3, I think only Conroe is reasonably priced.

I'm going to have to wait for the i650 and a 8600GT, but I'm still getting a e6600.

See, I told you you could find more uses for your G80 than a paer weight, didn't I?

You are unbelievably stubborn about trying new concepts out, unfortunately.

took them a long long long time to finish the review, but it is well worth it. detailed, tested every resolution/AA/af combination, min/max framerate etc

great job!

It's not like he grabbed it from the UPS guy and immediately used it as a paper weight. He tried the "new concept" out before he placed it in his drawer.

Besides, it's not exactly like you have much room to talk Mr. "G" stands for "Green".

I don't think he did try the new modes out, at least not properly, until recently, actually.

Not for the games it has driver issues with which is a very large chunk of my gaming library.

Even the game I'm playing right now would be unplayable if it didn't have a Direct3D renderer I could use instead of OpenGL.

I don't recall you ever singing praises about ATi's 6xMSAA. I have and I've also used it in the past and acknowledged it had good edge AA. G80 is much better of course but ATi's had 6xAA since 2002.

You'll never catch me singing ATi's praises about anything (unless they decide to shut down - I'll praise that for them).

Since when have I ever denied that I liked nvidia. I challenge you to produce a post of mine to that effect. Good luck trying -- you'll be needing it...

ill say the 8800gtx is a nice card, just not in the price range for me. benches are nice n all, but when it comes down to it, how much do you really need to spend on a damn video card. im a fanboy of whoever's the best for the buck, i dont care about having the top of the top of the line. considering in year and a half to two years, i'll have more than enough for a ultra high end computer right away that i can build.

Props to xbit for a quality review - HQ driver settings, AA enabled and min fps shown in graphs, not to mention a dizzying assortment of games. AT should take notes on how a review should be done.

QFT. Anandtech's benches disappoint time and time again when it comes to GPUs.
