X99

Rumor has it that these will not be showcased at Computex.

I for one are disappointed. im ready to build a new rig and high on the shopping list are X99 motherboards and M.2 x4 pcie SSD

Computex will still showcase Z97, I don't want Z97 with a CPU that wastes silicon on a crappy iGPU, this wasted silicone should be used for a better CPU.

99% of people that will buy a Devils Canyon CPU will pair it with a discrete GPU, thus leaving the Intel iGPU redundant.

Unfortunately the only way to get a pure CPU from intel now is Haswell-e for desktop or go the Xeon route.

LGA 1150 Xeons also have wasted silicon on the IGP you don't want, simply they have it disabled. Which is worse, cause you got but can't use around half of the die.

i feel this is what is gonna be a big part of what is gonna lead AMD back to popularity with their next architecture, the fact that they won't do integrated graphics on enthusiast processors.

Wishful thinking, I'm afraid. AMD's FX ("big core") line is dead, they are now using the FX branding for APUs. All of AMD's CPU designs going forward are going to be APUs. (Though they may still sell IGP-less APUs - APUs with the IGP disabled or defective.)

wait....isn't X99 the chipset for Haswell-e?
What pairing of CPU to X99 were you hoping to accomplish? Haswell refresh is still 1150 pins...X99 will work with 2011 pin CPUs, no?

except their integrated graphics are the only advantage they have, and your suggestion is that they abandon that and go back to the strategy that left them floundering against the midrange of intel's mainstream lineup (AMD not even in the ballpark when it comes to matching up against Intel's HEDT)... there's just no way they're going to return to a CPU vs. CPU strategy, certainly not anytime soon

AMD just needs to tread water until they can get stacked memory technology to unleash their APUs

I don't know why enthusiasts dislike Intel IGP. QuickSync is unmatched in what it does, and with the rising popularity of streaming gaming, as soon as Software catches up to use simultaneously Intel IGP for encoding and discrete GPU for games, it would be a perfect match. It is a fallback GPU in case your discrete card has issues - this is specially true if you like to reflash a Video Card BIOS to tune Power State settings or whatever. Power users (The REAL enthusiasts, not the gaming/overclocking crowd) also have uses for it, useful to have it if you do virtualization, more than Dual Monitors, etc.

The problem is that enthusiasts don't understand that they're a niche market. They compose the market segment that Intel charges a price premium for the top bin and Unlocked Multiplier in the mainstream platform, and where defective or downgraded Xeons parts go in the enterprise platform. Devil's Canyon will actually be the only exclusive product with design differences instead of something designed for another market and rebranded to make paying enthusiasts happy.

That. Maybe not an issue if you have multiple cards setting around but I would hate to have to pull the GPU out of my HTPC, load it and the drivers on my desktop just to try to troubleshoot something.

I think that is OP's complaint. Even if if he buys one "without igpu" it is still there but it is disabled, hence the still wasted space

Space for what? 😕

I dislike Intels IGP because it broken, take a look at the linux source, Intels own engineers cannot get de-interlacing working for the HD4xxx iGPU's. XBMC have disabled it and re written their code to use highly optimized software de-interlacing on current generation Haswells. I know this first hand because last year i thought great, ill update my HTPC and use Intels iGPU and save myself having to use a discreet GPU. it was great in theory but has not worked out that well in practice.

Re being a fallback GPU, its still stealing space (read generating heat) that could be used for a better CPU or allow more overclocking potential cause its not getting in the way and adding to the heat being generated.

Visualization is great for development and flexibility for deploying servers in a corporation, Not really something an overclock er is interested in.
If your after raw performance, bare metal will always win as you don't have an extra abstraction layer in between your software and your hardware.

Sure we are a niche market, The current generation CPU's from intel are design IMO for the HP's and Dells of the world, perfect for business desktops, keeps the BOM down as no GPU required cause its included. However this is now forced on us. If you add a decent discreet GPU then this iGPU is a waste of space that could have been used for more CPU cores or increasing the thermal envelope available to the CPU and hence clocks would be higher.

Correct that's why i said Haswell-e not haswell refresh.

MSI
ASROCK
EVGA

MSI claim to have both SATA Express and a M.2 connector, but looking at the photo i cannot see them. unless they are on the underside similar to what ASROCK have been doing recently.

ASROCK Extream4 and 6 both have the Ultra M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 connector, exactly what im looking for.

EVGA - don't they make video cards?? surly motherboards are not their specialty.

well wasted space as if the igpu was not there vs just being disabled, the die could be smaller or more cores or something

Intel makes chips with more cores... if that's what you want. Smaller...? Meh, whatever. ...or something...? Beer dispenser? 😉

I just don't see a problem with it as a mainstream and mild enthusiast chip.

EVGA have made mobos for a while.

And these are only prototypes. They don't even have names. Until they come out with final details, I'm not holding my breath. I'm nursing X58 as long as I can.
