X850XT vx 7600GT

I'm on a super strict budget and want to know if the 7600GT is worth the extra $40? I know I've heard its a great midrange card but is the performance increase over the X850XT worth the extra $40?

Keep in mind I'm on a very strict budget and $40 actually makes a difference...

X850XT will get higher fps (not sure how much, check toms hardware vga charts), but I believe the stock cooler is louder, and it also doesnt have Shader Model 3 support.

X850xt vs 7600GT on Tom's interactive VGA charts.

X850XT card runs at best for $102ish on Newegg right now. 7600GT card runs $121ish on Newegg right now. Both after rebate.

Can't comment on the X850XT but I just picked up a XFX 7600GT XXX (590 core, 1600 memory speed) from Circuit City for $117.xx after rebates and coupons. Kicks the snot out of my 9800Pro and 5900XT cards (of course, the E6300 might be part of that too! )

About $19.00 ish difference from the EGG...YMMV!

From what I had read, both are really close in specs with maybe the X850XT edging the 7600GT by a few fps here and there. However, the 7600GT is SLI capable.

One other consideration is that the X850xt card needs the extra PCI-e power supply connection. The 7600GT is lower power and does not need it.

The 7600GT fan was too loud for me (the X850XT would most likely have been too). Replaced with Arctic Silencer NV 6 version 2 (yes, it fits and cools nicely) and now it's silent and cool!

And keep in mind the X850XT is ATI's older generation cards. Stick with the 7600GT, and get an overclocked version if possible. Although, it really won't matter since DX10 and SM 4 cards are due out later this year anyway.

i'd say go with the X850 XT, spend the extra 40 bucks on a cooler for the Radeon and OC it to madness beyond what the PE version will be on stock... don't forget that although the 7600 is a few fps faster, the 256-bit interface makes your OC'ing happier with a 3rd party cooler.

My X850xt pe runs at 600/600 no problem...don't know how good of an OCer the 7600GT is, but I was pleasantly surprised with this one. That's on the stock cooler, really pushing the limits of my PSU. Core alone will get up to ~620 or so, but I can't push the RAM as far.

I have a 7600GT and to be honest it runs all my games perfect. I play all my games at 1024x768 though..but from what i've seen the card handles everything great. Doesn't overclock though, but I have one of the basic models.

I have decided to go with the 7600GT but since I won't be buying my parts for probably another 2 months maybe the price will come down.

I was looking at THG interactive GPU chart there and I'm not sure I trust those numbers. They seem low to me. Not for one card but for all of them. Anyone else got that feeling too? I'm thinking it might be better to look at other reviews and see if the number correlate properly.

Budget remember...If I got the DS3 I would have to get read of maybe a 1GB stick of RAM or I wouldn't be able to get as good of a video card.

The S3 will work fine for me plus the only difference is the max amount of RAM and the # of SATA connectors really...
