Hello, just wondering if a 81C GPU load temp is ok for a X850XT running stock speeds and stock cooling?

I'm not getting any artifacts or other problems, but it seemed a bit high so I figured I'd check here to make sure.

Thanks

Kind of high compared to mine.. ( GTO2 at XT + speeds.. ) I get about 68 -72.. I think 70's are pretty norm..

I reinstalled my stock heatsink.. It had way too much gunk on it .. dropped the temp about 4 ..

What kind of ambient temp and case cooling do you have ?

Tad on the high side. Nothing to be worried about (right now if you fix it).

Paranioa would probably set in if I were gaming at those temps a lot, but it's OK, just OK.

A quick fix might be to reseat the HS with some new AS5 and give the core a nice cleaning with some alcohol.

Anything over 80C is too high for comfort. Even if it seems to work ok, you're still shortening the life of your card by running at those temps. I would first take off the cooler, and completely clean out all the thermal paste - sometimes they put way too much and it only makes things worse. Then apply a small amount of AS5 and reseat the cooler. This alone may drop you temps by ~5 degrees, so it's worth a shot. Also, with programs like Ati Tool or Ati Tray Tools you can manually adjust the fan speen on the cooler. Setting a higher fan speed will also bring down the temps, at the cost of increased noise.

If all else fails, get an aftermarket cooler like a zalman vf700 or a Arctic Silencer. I'm using a zalman on my 16 pipe gto OC'd beyond XT PE speeds, and the temps go to ~60C under load.

I had they same problem with my X850XT.

Get ATI tool the latest one and adjust the fan speeds.

I use the dynamic settings.

If you do it right it'll stay around 70c on load.

Fast replies :)
I had a look at ATT and the dynamic fan settings were keeping the fan speed very low at those temps.
It's a bit loud once it gets to 30% though so I think I'll get a 3rd party cooler

@Diogenes, case temps are reported to be 30C at load, ambient was as high as 52C. The card is seated in the lower slot on a crossfire mobo so there's not much airflow in that part, I do have two front intake fans blowing that way but they're running very silent (which is a tad pointless now) so there's not that much cold air getting to the front of the heatsink.

Anyway thanks for the help, much appreciated.

I would suggest an ATI Silencer Rev 2 since it will exhaust all that hot air outside of your case . . . and its very quiet even at 100% . . .

way too high . . . that's normal for a 9800xt

is it PCIe or AGP? . . . even when my AGP x850xt is O/C'd [547/614] and under heavy load [FEAR/3dMark] it never gets out of the 50s [C].

And my stock fan does a great job of exhausting the hot air out of the case . . . perhaps yours isn't seated properly.

Do a search here ...

ATi is still using the 'shim', and the HSF unit doesnt seat on the GPU properly.

I had a tuff time removing the HSF unit.. but it was worth it.

My current temp is 46C

Load is 53-54 C.

It's PCIe.
Running the fan at 27% during load took the temp down to 67C. It's too loud for my tastes though so I'll go for the ATI silencer mentioned above in the thread. Again thanks for the help all.
