X850XT PE In Stock!!! $828 Ouch

Kudos for ATi for making some great video cards in extremely small quantities. The X850XTPE is out, yet I can't remember a time when I could go to any B&M store and buy an X800XTPE in quantity.

At least 6800 Ultras were eventually available at MSRP towards the tail end of their lifespan.

it saddens me that there are people willing to pay this much money for a few fps improvements.

NM, my bad. These *were* going for $900 a couple days back.

maybe the one on ebay (for example...take a link on the first ebay link at the pictures) is a little cheaper because it doesn't have dual dvi. the one on monarchcomputer does.

Not just for a few fps improvements. You also get to log onto AT and brag to everyone that you have an X850XT PE and everybody will know how 1337 you are for spending way too much money for a few fps improvements. 😀

There is nothing to be sad about...its pumping much needed money into our weak economy.

It's just following the same formula as everythinng else, you can either market to the masses, or you can market to wealthy people with way to much disposable income. Look at all the reality shows on Discovery, they're all businesses built around catering to rich people who are willing to spend exhorbitant sums on something just because they can ($200K motorcycles, $20K airplane desks, $100K hotrods, blowing $40K on blackjack). Dells got their XPS line, Wal-Mart sells $3K TV's...

I'm not a big gamer, so this card means pretty much nothing to me, but I guarantee you the meeting at ATI involved the realization that a good number of their customers are under 25 and drive $50K+ cars, have $10K+ Home theaters and they need to get a piece of that action.

By the way, I need a better job.

If I'm not mistaken, they make a lot more money from the $200 price point cards. The reason ATI and NVIDEA come out with the crazy high end cards is just to get attention and so they can claim they are the "king" leading to more sales of lower end cards.

You're right, I was probably trying to stretch my point a little too far, for a company this size, the prestige factor does a lot more for profits down the line than this specific card probably will right now. At the same time, you never know how many they'll sell. Getting near a grand for a video card though seems to be taking it to another level, but when you think about it, the consumer electronics industry has kind of pioneered selling to the wealthy. 5 years ago people paid $600 for basically the same $50 DVD player we get now, same went for CD players before that (I remember seeing what I thought were astronomical prices for video cards as well a few years ago). Early adopters and spoiled rich kids make good customers.

no it's not, mr economics guru, it's just taking money that would have probably be spent on other products, and putting it into the retailer bank account, and that is less likely to be spent.

WOW!
What a way to think of it, on the other hand no one is paying us outrageous amounts for our services... No one is paying us outrageous amounts for a few minor percents of improvement... Pumping money into our weak economy could also be people paying us more so we spend more, it is a gradual cycle, but it would help if the general population would be a slight bit wealthier, Would also like to see all the stockbrokers and whatnot that f-d us over in the huge stock market rush be plotted against and take their money for a change...

Maybe it didnt come out right but think about what it would and the tremendous factors involved in order to boost our economy., then again not my forte..

I tell you what, though, in 2 years when these are selling on the forums for like $80, I'm gonna buy one and come find this thread and sneer at everyone who bought one at this price, hehe 😉
