X850xt pe getting old?

well i have the money to get a x850xt pe but i was wondering if i buy it now how long will it last. like will i be able to play games 6months from now? the problem is i dont have a pci-e 16x, so i cant buy a 7800gt or a X1800XL. Should i save up for a pcie board? or go for the x850xt pe

The thing is, if you don't have a PCI-e slot then the X850XT PE is as fast as you can get.

What games do you play? That can often determine how fast a card you should buy.

What prices are you looking at getting an X850XT PE for, compared to the 7800GT or X1800XL? What is your current system specs and what would you upgrade to on PCI-e?

If you're willing to shell out the money on a PCI-e board, then get at least a 7800GT/X1800XL class card, otherwise it would probably be a waste.

if you save your money you can have what you want.
The saphire X800GTO2 could be an idea or the other unlockable board that is in the threads mentioned lots(club3d is it or connect 3d)X800GTO. you can use the money you saved from getting the X850XT PE on AGP to put towards a motherboard with pci express and go with those options. The GT and XL are even better options if you are willing to put in some overtime.

i play FEAR, NFS Most Wanted, and Quake 4

I found the X850XT PE for around $350

Right now i got
P4 2.6ghz
1gig of ram
9600pro

if the cost of a new motherboard and new video card is around $400 then ill do it

like will i be able to play games 6months from now?
I guarantee that card will run any games in the next 6 months. That's not an issue. The question is: do you have a problem running games at less than HIGH settings? If the answer is no, a decent agp card - the x850xt being the fastest available - will do you fine. However, it might be good idea to look at slightly slower agp cards if you're concerned about the price/performance ratio.

If the answer is yes, then pci-e is obviously the only way to go.

$400 for a mb/gpu is about right ($100 mb $300 7800gt), but remember that you'll have to make sure the cpu you have is compatible which means considering the age of the cpu and whether it will bottleneck a top of the line pci-e video card.

I don't know much about Intel cpus, except that they suck for gaming. If you're gonna get a new mb anyway, maybe consider an extra $150 and go amd. Unless you have intel specific ram 🙁

Again, I recommend doing some research on real world performance gains of an x850xt vs, say, a $100 cheaper x800xl or upcoming 6800gs (yes, agp).

i answered most of your questions with the post above but i am totally fine playing games at less than high settings.

In that case just upgrade the video card on that rig and maybe plan for a complete overhaul in a couple of years.

What about a 6800GT?
Most of them overclock to Ultra speeds and are very fast.

I have one in my rig and can play everything at high quality.

The OP is right, the x850xt PE is a piece of crap!.... Therefore you should sell it to me for $20 and buy your 7800 series card. Wait Wait hold up... what am I thinking? Its so outdated you should pay ME $20 to take the card off your hands! 😛

My X800xl is going strong still, haven't found a need to upgrade with anything I play on it. Probably will not upgrade until next gen parts come out and 7800 GT's/GTX's are priced in the mid-high $200's

X850XT/PE overall perform nicely, of course Nvidia has an upper hand in OpenGL games in that generation and so for the X8XX series on Direct3d

That would cost him even more in that case - if he's going to pci-e, he'd probably also want to switch to A64, possibly new PSU, and basically he might as well just build a new rig. Although the x850xt is overpriced compared to some deals you can get on PCI-e, it is the fastest AGP card nonetheless.

6800GT/X850XT-PE are both overpriced right now. Looking at your current spec, the best option is just to buy anything CHEAPEST from 6800/X800/X850 Series. You'll see a huge gain coming from 9600.

X850XT PE is PLENTY fast for any game out or coming out for the next 6 months, what isn't plenty fast is ur 2.6ghz p4 if you want to upgrade anything start there.

It is faster than the 6800 Ultra, although it doesn't blow it out of the water.

Regardless, if you're sticking to AGP, the X850XT PE is the fastest card you can buy.

$350 is a bit pricey though, especially considering you can find a (faster) 7800GT for about $300.

I'd say your best bets are either to:

-scour the FS/FT message boards for a used X850XT or X850XT PE . You should be able to find one in the $200-250 range.

-Find an X800XT/6800GT/X800GTO2/X800XL/6800GS for about $200, which are close to the X850XT PE in performance (maybe 10-15% slower tops)

-consider upgrading to PCI-e

IMO $350 is too much to pay for an X850XT PE. If you can find it for <$300, then go for it 🙂 .

It will still be pretty good. If you could overclock your CPU to 3-3.2 Ghz it would be excellent 🙂 . What kind of motherboard do you have?

2.6 Ghz Intel ain't the greatest these days, but you've got a gig of RAM (hopefully in dual channel), and 2.6 Ghz isn't that bad.

If your going to spend the $350 on the the X850XT PE, then you might as well spend $50-$60 more and upgrade to PCI-e & a 7800GT... in your case I wouldn't do either one though... if your comfortable flashing the cards BIOS & OC'ing (with a slight chance it won't work) then go for an X800GTO AGP version and if not, wait a week or two for the AGP version of the 6800GS... either one will be incredible compared to a 9600 and shouldn't be capped too badly by your P-4 @ 2.6ghz although a faster CPU sure wouldn't hurt.

Instead of getting the PE for $350 get the regular version for $299 + $50 MIR at Microcenter: X850XT with rebate

It is almost as fast as the PE for quite a bit less.

I agree with the second post that you should only consider a new setup if you get at least a 7800gt/X1800XL. You will need a new motherboard and since you are doing that it makes sense to switch over to a new cpu. That is going to cost you more than $400.

I know how you feel man seems like my X800XL is slowly but surely getting slower in the pc gaming world.
