x850xt or x800xl?

Well I was zooming around ZZF the other day and came upon a Sapphire x850xt(not Pe) for 460 bucks. I was like hmm this is interesting. Now it is a OEM card but heck for that price and it keeps right there with a x850xt PE I wouldnt worry about that.

now my problem is this. do I pay for that card or should I save around 100 or so bucks and get a x800xl? Thje x850xt seems to be around 10fps or higher most of the time. And seems to shine when at the highest possible settings.

I mainly want to play source based games and the upcoming BF2. Other games are older and will run awesome on both. but im thinking BF2 might be a GPU heavy game and will require some grunt. anyone else think that?

opinions?

The reviews show most games giving maybe eight extra frames per second at most, with Halo being the only exception, but who's going to tell the difference between 100 and 110 fps in that game? With a 50% increase in cost and a 5%-15% in game performance I'd defenitely say it isn't worth it.

Considering your 20" LCD running games at 1600x 1200 you need the X850. My 20" LCD loves my X800XT PE. New games need a lot of video card to play high res.

im thinking of just getting a HIS x800xl. should play things on 1600. should do hl2 with aa/af

It will. The X800 Pro already runs at 1600x1200 AA 6x and AF 16x at 42 FPS.

42 fps... thats barely playable... my floor for lowest acceptable FPS is 50... Any lower than that and you really start to see a difference. But then again when you get up around 90+ you can barely see a difference beyond that.

42 isn't so bad if it's solid. Most console games run at only about 30 FPS. Granted they probably use some motion blur techqniques to compensate for the low FPS. But if the X800 Pro can hit that FPS at that resolution then the X800 XL PCIe (not the AGP) probably hit over 50 FPS.

How about a $200 diff, Compusa has a Sunday only (Tomorrow )10% off coupon (in their flyer) on any single non-sale item. The X800 XL is not on sale at $299, so net cost is $270 plus any taxes if you have them.

16 pipelines of the X800 XL should do nicely

i agree with tallman45 - a sub-$300 X800XL should be your best bet. Even if the difference were only $100, I'd still go for the XL. It's just a hell of a card for the price. I bet you can OC the XL to XT non-PE speeds anyways. If I remember correctly, the XL is a pretty good overclocker, because it's a 16-pipe solution that is downclocked quite a bit so that it doesn't come in too close to the X850XTPE. I think the core is only at 400MHz, and I imagine it'll hit close to 500MHz without too much trouble.

Depends what kind of cooling you have with the x800xl.

I have the zalman vf700cu on it (powercolor vivo model) and after the sneaky pencil voltmod to raise the core to 1.5v, I oc at 475 core and 580 mem.

Temps are a little higher then I'd like - 37 idle and 64 full load, but after another week this arctic silver 5 should 'set in' and mayble I'll see a few degrees lower.

with watercooling you should hit close to 600 on the core with no problems, as the only reason I can't clock any higher is heat related.

I'd say take the x800xl and put the cash towards something nice.... psp's are coming out in a few weeks 😉

The X800XL is a new 11u core. It does not utilize low-k process. It is highly doubtful you can get that card above 450 core (which is very decent) on air. These cards will not be as good overclockers as you think. Numerous review sites seem to cap around the 430's.
At any rate, this card offers near 6800GT performance out of the box so there will be no need to o/c anyways.

Man they screwed us. The add was for any "non-advertised item"... They Advertised it. LOL. No additional discount for the x800xl. Dang!

Good try!

whats a PSP?

and Im wondering if I should wait on the HIS x800xl or just buy a plain x800xl from ATI and buy a AC5 cooler for it? I dont really like the idea of ripping the cooler off though 🙁 I may go water sometime this summer and of course the video card will be included. Ill just wait and see if HIs can get to market

Before buying any card, you should consider getting an extra 512 stick of RAM.
I'd buy the X800 XL for 300 bucks. It's cheaper, smaller, cooler, single-slot, and requires less power. And it's not that slower than the X850XT.
