X850XT and the heatwave

Hello folks.

Setting up my new rig and I just ordered an X850XT for a little over $200(cdn) shipped.

However, I didn't see reports on the heat this card produces until now 🙁 One review states that with the default heatsink/fan the card goes up to 90C and another says it is around 70-80. Either way, this card can bake a cake (mmm cake)

I read a review or three (more like a dozen) on the Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer 5 Rev. 2. It seems to work well according to the reviews.

I think I am looking at three options.

1 - Crank the fan using ATITools and underclock this card so that it is less like the sun.

2 - Buy the Silencer 5 and hope it lives up the the hype.

3 - Stick with the stock speeds and fan and pray the inside of my case does not turn into a large version of Barbie's easy bake oven.

Any advice?
 
i got an x800xt pe which is comparable, i think. Bought a VF-900 the other day, and am pleased. 38c idle, and 53 at max, with pretty poor case flow // stock was like 85c max 53c idle 😛
 
I have one (X850XT PE) from powercolor, I used an "Arctic Cooling Rev.2 ATi 5 (X850 Series) VGA Silencer" lapped with AS5 on GPU and AS ceramique on the RAM pads and got the cooling down, I also modded the end plate to remove the metal grill.

I made a post someplace but cant remember where, I recall comparative max temps in ATI tool showed it was a good move. Nice and quiet.

I always replace stock VGA coolers these days.
 
i like the stock cooler . . . my [agp] x850xt never gets hot . . . otoh, maybe a little noise at full throttle

IF you do change the cooler, make sure it [also] exhausts air OUT of the case. 😉

i suggest you TRY it first with the stock cooler . . . and of course, replacing you cooler VOIDS your waranty.

I think I will try the default heatsink/fan and mess the RPM's with ATI Tools when I get it all together. Then I can what the heat is like and go from there.

I have heard that ATI Tools can show you the temp of your video card. is this with supported video cards only? Or does it work with any video card? I would love to see what my 9800 Pro is running at right now. Get a general idea of case heat in the future maybe.

Using one of those myself, works great and very quiet. I am using a fan controller.

I'm using the VF700-cu on my x850xt. Overclocked a little to 550/591, it idles at 38 and never breaks 60 at load. Oh, and I have the fan running at 5v all the time.
 
The 9800p does not have temp monitoring, so Ati tool cant show the temps. As long as the x850xt runs under 80C load then I wouldnt bother switching heatsinks, uness you also want it quiet. Both the AC silencer and the zalman vf700 work great on those cards, even if the vf700 doesnt exhaust hot air. The heat output of those cards is not much compared to the thermal dissipation of the x1900's.

When I am playing a game I could probably run the fan high enough to keep the temp down. If the temp rises a lot I can always grab the Zalman or AC Silencer. I am hoping since I won't be overclocking the temp will stay reasonable, but I'll have to wait and see.

Anyone know what the temp of a non-oc'd 9800 Pro is?
 
i had a x800xl(not the same but similar i spose) and the ac5 does help quite a bit, i dont recall my temps but i know i could overclock and reach some of the higher cards easily without ajusting voltage.
 
I have an 850XT AGP too and it does run a bit warm... I have the case open now and it peaks at around 65C during extended gaming. It peaks around 70C when I have the case closed. Idles around 40C when not gaming.

I love this card's performance and getting hot doesn't seem to hurt the performance any but it does tend to heat up my bedroom unless I am cranking my window air. If I wasn't planning on an upgrade to PCI later this summer the heat might be an issue. I mostly don't want to void any warranty on it by replacing the heatsink/fan in case I decide to sell it.

My Radeon X800XT PE runs idle between 48c and 53c, but in 3D Games is between 73c and 80c, hot enough to warm my bedroom which is already warm, damn, I hope it doesn't decrease the life of the card.
