x850 xt pe vs 7800 gt

the logic would be that you don't need a 7800 to play any games right now.. if you stay a generation or two behind in buying vid cards you can upgrade much more frequently and still play every current game

Maybe consider an x800xl?
 
depends on what res you plan on playing with and what settings obviously the GT is faster. it not all that crazy to buy a mid range card now instead of highend. What I usually do is, when I see there are cards that give me alteast a %50 percent boost in the res with the settings I use then considering it. No point buying a new card for only a 15-20% increase.
But if you have to buy right now, the 30 dollar difference is not much at all.
 
7800GT

this coming froma person with the x850 xtpe.

i havent seen the GT yet, but i would like shader 3.0
 
7800GT...the "buy cheap, upgrade often" theory can be disproven by the fact that a 7800GT will allow you to stick with one gfx card for a good 2-3 years.

i'd rather have new every once in awile he's gonna get slower frames till the card suxs its like the 9800xt everyone wanted it but than it just plain suxed soon after for the price.

 
I just got a 6800gt for $225. I'm going to wait til ATI comes out with its next gen. Then I'll see how worth it is to upgrade. The games that need those cards aren't really out yet.
 
If your MOBO can use a 7800gt without it covering any other ports, like it does on the Epox Nforce Ultra then go with that.

I got a 6800GT (brand new, sealed in packaging) for sale for $280 if you want to save a $100 😀 😉
 
I also agree with W00t. Having a highend card for 3 years isn't always valid. I've always been a person to buy the highend cards. had a 9700pro most I got out of it was 2 years after that the newer games at the settings I was use to playing with just wasn't playable anymore. I now have a X800XTPE, and max i'll get out of this one will probably be 2 years. if you wanna buy a GT and have to deal with real low FPS on the 3rd year then so be it. But for me it just wasn't playable at the settings I was use to. The best thing about buying the highend cards, if they retain alot more of their value for longer. so when it comes time to sell it you'll take a loss but not as big as say with a midrange card.
 
Assuming you dont already have a 6800GT or X800XL class card, then neither also because it will be just an incremental upgrade.But to choose between the 2 cards i'd take the 7800gt.

It has nothing to do with the fact that it is a single slot card. It is simply a longer card in usual. It does not matter for the vast majority of motherboards. Just the Nforce 4 Epox 939 board. If you use a video card on that board it will cover up the ports needed for a cd drive and pata HDD.
