I've been stress testing my systems GFX card lately after finding a bad stick of ram in my system and removing it only partially helped its stability. The system would hard lock after extended play and after being reset the screen would display these bent brown coloured bands across the screen. The card was very hot to the touch and further testing with Rivatuner monitering the temp showed the card was peaking at around 78 degrees C, and this is with the site of the case off. It would idle at about 45. I decided to put the side back on and loop 3dmark 05 over night. 3dmark crashed after 5 hours and the card had it 98 C at its peak, which it held for those 5 hours. The strange thing is i can hardly hear the cards fan pick up at such high temps. So onto the questions:

1) What sort of temps is this card safe up to?

2) Should the card even be getting this high?

3) Is my cards fan not spinning up as much as it should be?

Extra info: The system runs through 12 hours of memtest86 with no errors and likewise survives about 14 hours of each prime95 test (and then i get home and stop them). Help anyone?

45º C seems like a typical idle temp for the X850 GPU, that's where mine sits... 98 is a pretty outrageous load temp though... that's about 208º F!! I don't think it should normally get that hot, mine hits the high 80s or very low 90s during a workout but not even close to 98. You may indeed have a defective fan.

Take a look at ATi Tray Tools - it has a manual override section for the fan. Lots of other cool functions too, great little utility app.
