I burnt out my 2nd 9800 pro this week and decided to get a better video card to finally get with the times. To use my computer, I installed my old ti4600 and the drivers. This I think was a big mistake.
I picked up an ATI x850 pro and decided to pop it in. I removed the nvidia drivers and the ati drivers. I then put the card in and tried to install the official ati driver. It gave me a zero display service error. Something is wrong with the smartgart driver, it won't load. The service just doesn't start and you can't start it manually. So after this I removed the drivers again and installed the latest omega drivers. Well now the computer boots up and shows garbage on the screen. I thought the card was screwed. Not so! Upon removing the nvidia gart driver, the card works fine.
So now my question is how can I fix these two problems. Something seems to be out of wack with my drivers and driver cleaner pro does not do a good enough job of cleaning them up. The card also doesnt let windows boot if fastwrites are on. It shows artifiacts and freezes on the color windows 2000 boot screen. When I boot xp, the smartgart driver there keeps turning off SBA and the other optimization. If I turn on fastwrites, XP also shows artifacts and freezes on the color WINXP loading screen.
