Depends on the games. My gut is 6800GT cause it is cheaper ( from what I remember). SM3.0 support and can oc pretty well.

This is a question I am also currently pondering. I am building a used P-4 box for a friend, and in the process, I'll have the chance to upgrade my 6800GT to a X850 XT. From what I've gathered the X850 XT is faster in most everything but Doom3.

Has anyone upgraded from a 6800GT to a X850XT?
Will many future (1-2 years) games use the Doom3 engine?
Does Shader 3.0 or any other specialties of the Nvidia card make much difference against the raw horsepower of the Ati?
Is $100 (my cost of this upgrade) sound like worth-it-land to anybody?

Any help on this decision is greatly appreciated in advance.

Also, my 6800GT overclocked from 350/1000 to 415/1100 does the X850 XT overclock pretty well?

Just one last edit: The Ati card runs hotter, but has a dual-slot design that blows the hot air out of the case, is this cooling method better at lowering case temps?

Hello x80064. Go troll somewhere else.

I have a new monitor coming and need to know with limited budget (ie no uberness 7800gtx etc) upgrading from 9600xt

Just pick whichever is cheaper. The rest of your system is not that fast to push either of these cards to their limits, so pick your favorite color. But if you have a preference for Doom3 or HL2/CS then pick whichever card does best in that game.

got my x800xt pe for 220$ and it's an excellent performer, just get the one you can find cheaper and/or better warranty.

X850XT PE AGP = fastest AGP card
X800GTO 2 = great for modders/overclocker
X800XT Pe AGP = cheap card at the moment
6800GT AGP = best all in all card with advance features like shader 3.0 and HDR

x800xt is faster. If same price get that. You havent given price so we cant decide for you, all we can say are dull generalizationsl ike x800xt is maybe -10% - +20% to 6800gt.

I don't think you can go wrong with either card. Me, personally, I prefer ATI only because I'm used to them and have had only 1 nVidia card which was a MSI 128MB GeForce4-Ti4400 AGP 4x which I did enjoy very much. Flip a coin!:)

I love my 6800 GT, but there's good X800s to be had as well. Beyond the specific title thing (like Doom 3), if you do a decent amount of Open GL gaming, that could put a couple of ticks extra in the 6800 GTs column. I think all of these cards have been out long enough that the market has given them honest pricing, so the bang-for-buck ought to be spot-on.

There's a video card guide on the front page of AT that's pretty recent, might help some too.

Well it comes down to an ATI brand / made or an eVGA. I would think a lifetime warranty would push eVGA to the top. I am in PMs with two people and cant decide. I was told the 6800gt runs hotter than the x800xt and needs more power.
I have a Thermaltake Purepower 420W. The gt person currently is lower in price than the xt person's lowest current offer.

6800GT, cause it's probably gonna be cheaper and the performance difference isn't gonna be worth the extra price.

I too am wrestling with this question because I'm looking for a card for a very powerful, relatively new system that uses AGP, so this would be the "final upgrade" for the system unless ATI or nVidia releases one of the newer cards in AGP. I'm hoping to get another 4 or 5 years our of this rig.

For right now it seems like the x850xt-pe is more powerful than the 6800gt. But...what about three years from now when all sorts of games are using Shader Model 3.0, like Unreal Tournament 2007 and the Unreal 3 Engine based games? Will the extra processing power of the x850xt-pe be able to overcome the disadvantage it has compared to the 6800gt? Does the advantage the 6800gt gets from being able to use Shader Model 3.0 allow it to overtake the x850xt-pe? (Assume that both cards are similar in price.)

you could always go this route: SAPPHIRE ATI X800GTO2 AGP 256MB GDDR3 TV-OUT DVI BROWN BOX

seems fully moddable to x800xt/x800xtpe: X800 GTO² to X850 XT Mod

It's tempting and I've been keeping track of that development. But so far no one has actually done it with one of the AGP cards. Presumably the Sapphire X800 GTO2 in AGP uses the R480 core. Will those very same Bios's and flashing techniques for the PCI-E cards work for the AGP version?.
