Just pick whichever is cheaper. The rest of your system is not that fast to push either of these cards to their limits, so pick your favorite color. But if you have a preference for Doom3 or HL2/CS then pick whichever card does best in that game.

got my x800xt pe for 220$ and it's an excellent performer, just get the one you can find cheaper and/or better warranty.

I too am wrestling with this question because I'm looking for a card for a very powerful, relatively new system that uses AGP, so this would be the "final upgrade" for the system unless ATI or nVidia releases one of the newer cards in AGP. I'm hoping to get another 4 or 5 years our of this rig.
For right now it seems like the x850xt-pe is more powerful than the 6800gt. But...what about three years from now when all sorts of games are using Shader Model 3.0, like Unreal Tournament 2007 and the Unreal 3 Engine based games? Will the extra processing power of the x850xt-pe be able to overcome the disadvantage it has compared to the 6800gt? Does the advantage the 6800gt gets from being able to use Shader Model 3.0 allow it to overtake the x850xt-pe? (Assume that both cards are similar in price.)
