I'm guessing there isn't a huge difference between the 2, or in fact, between any X800XT(PE or not) and any X850XT(PE or not). Is this true? I knot eh X800XT is based on the R420 and the X850XT is based on the R480, and specs wise, the X800XT PE seems to be identical to the X850XT except for a 20MHz faster memory. Clock for clock, does the R420 perform identically to the R480?

By reading a whole loads of article over the intranet.....X850XT and the X800XT PE is on par somewhat

Thanks. I guess my last statement about the R420 and R480 is kinda true then. What's the difference between the 2 then? They're even both manufactured using the same 0.13u process.

The X850XT should be slightly faster & run a bit cooler, its worth paying a bit more for it but not a lot.

I mean, why did ATI feel that it was neccessary to come up with R480 when the R420 is just about identical?

It was a respin to support higher clock speeds. Remember there's also an X850XT PE, so they extended speeds somewhat. It's possible the respin also raised yields.

Oh, and one more tiny detail: R480's PCIe-native, whereas R420 is AGP-native. R480 is actually a respin of R423, which was the PCIe-native version of R420.

basically just a refresh with higher clockspeeds...and price too.

i thought that ati released X850Pro/XT/XTPE to keep their "speed crown" on prolly because the 6800Ultra was beating the X800XT/XTPE (dont remember which one) in *some* benchmarks. i personally thought that it was silly to release something new barely 6 months later after they brought out the X800 cards...

OK, I looked at a review of the X850XT and AT claims there's absolutely no architectural difference between the R420 and the R480. Anyway, when I mention the 2, I mean to compare them for similar interfaces, i.e. R420 vs R481 for AGP, likewise for PCI-e. I guess you guys are right - it's simply a respin, though they're both at 130nm.

I thought the x800xt is AGP native and it uses a chip to bridge to PCI-E, and PCI-E x800 was never mass produced to enter the market?
the x850xt is PCI-E native and uses a chip to bridge to AGP. That seems to be the case but I ain't sure.
