I have spent the last few months reading review after review on top end video cards like the X800XT, XT PE, 6800GT and Ultra.
I?ve big going round in circles as each review has something else to say about the card with changes my mind.
I have always had a GeForce card and at the mo have a Ti 4600 128mb which is, or was, a fantastic card but is a bit dated now so its about that time i get a new one BUT WHICH ONE?!!

I have heard a lot of really good things about the X800 and was really thinking about getting a X800XT PE but then some say the 6800 Ultra is better. I?m well confused!!

I?m also trying to find an opinion on the drivers for the cards and seem to think that the catalyst drivers are really good and there are more frequent updated.

Basically i want u guys to put your opinions forward on this virtual battleground and fight it out!!

the x800xt pe is the fastest and best card on the market. period. like the other guy said, if you can find one at retail price of $499 buy it immediately. the only spot you see better performace with the 6800 ultra is on doom3 and its negligible and unnoticeable. much like running d3 at 1600x1200 on a gt vs an ultra, you really can't actually see the difference with your eyes. just with the benchmark.

Both are super cards. But in most comparisons, the XT seems to have a slight edge. The Ultra has a definate edge in Doom3 though, by the way I think the game is ok at best. Which ever you can find cheaper. But truth be told if you can get one those Gainward 6800GT Golden Samples, thats the ticket.

Its not just a matter of plus or minus 5 frames in the 100fps range. The whole idea is get the most out of your bucks. Well, like most ppl said xt(pe or not) is a bit faster. The whole point with xt and ultra is virtually they are nowhere to be found. For example my trusty e-tailer (overclockers.co.uk) only have a power color x800xt in stock right now, and no thanks, i will not spend 350 pounds (~500$) for a Power Color. If you can get your hands in a xt for $500 or less from a decent manufacturer (asus, gigabyte, saphire, HIS etc) grab it. Situation is a bit better for 6800ultra cards but not much. Either way both cards are fantastic. My advice, check out x800pro and 6800gt as well.

Why didn't we ask RealityTime in the first place? All the wasted threads and time, when apparently "the x800xt pe is the fastest and best card on the market. period". Who knew?!

I like my XT PE. Suppose I got lucky and found it at the BB website for retail at $499 about a month ago, if you can call spending that much on a video card 'lucky'. Maybe dumb is a more appropriate word!

It took me months of searching to find one as I refused to be ripped off. Orders at Gateway and then Dell failed to materialize.

Toms hardware has a good article about the total lack of PE's and Ultra's, doesn't look good for those wanting to buy at a fair price.

Good luck!

Both cards have their benefits and drawbacks. Both basically one up eachother depending on the game. I'd get either card that u can find for ~$500. They are pretty rare, and fairly hard to come by for their actual retail price. If you can't find either of these, get the 6800gt because its $100 cheaper, and can be overclocked to Ultra speeds. Its really a good card for what u pay for.

You can find Gigabyte's X800XT at gameve.com. Its not PE but it costs 465 which is the best deal you'll find.

I've used Nvidia cads up until the beginning of this year when I got my current 9700pro.

While the 9700pro is a great card, I prefer the Nvidia control panel over the ATi one (an no way will I be installing the ATI CC or whatever, way too much bloat for me).

If I were buying a top of the line card, it would be a tough call between the X800XT and the 6800U. In the end, I think I'd go with the X800 since it is smaller, faster in most things, and uses less power.

But, the "mid range" is more my style, so the $400 range is most likely where I will be looking. At this point the 6800GT is my favorite, and the X800pro is a distant second. The X800Pro still is smaller and uses less power, but it is not really any faster than the 6800GT and therefore I don't think I'd want to continue with the ATI control panel.

As far as game crashes go, I had a slightly worse time with CoD on my 9700pro than my GF3 Ti200, but most other things have run fine, so I don't really have a problem with the game drivers; it's just the ATI control panel (especially the "Display" portion where you are supposed to be able to set refresh rates and resolutions) that has bugged me.

Finally, while it is good to know that ATI is updating their drivers frequently, I personally do not update my drivers frequently (if at all). I may have updated my 9700pro drivers once (when I reintsalled windows) but I definitely don't plan on making a habit of it. Obviously, the more choices the better, as long as a company doesn't start using a frequent release schedule to cover up for a half-assed attempt at quality (not saying that ATI has poor quality).

Anyway, both cards are great, and you shouldn't feel bad either way you go. Each card has its own strengths and weaknesses so there isn't a "perfect" solution, but almost any of the solutions will be very, very, good.

-D'oh!

This is all I have to say. I've got a 6800GT (6, actually), a 6800 Ultra (just 2), a x800 Pro (1), and a x800 XT PE (2), and I tell you what...in the boxes I game with, the 6800 Ultra stays there. I've ran extensive tests with all of them, on various systems, and I'm much more satisfied with the 6800 than I am the x800.

My 2 cents, take it for what it's worth.

While in the vast majority of games your X800XTPE shows noticeable perf differences from 6800U right? Have you ever seen a 6800U in action to compare it with or you're just talkin with bench numbers that you seem to neglect in other cases?
Great. One more troll in the company :disgust:

Am I missing something? The X800XT PE IS generally the fastest card on the market, with the exception of D3 and a couple selected resolutions in a few games.

No you didn't miss anything... And don't show me benches plz,I can show you many of them...
Of course X800XT PE is the fastest card by a significant margin in some games, but this guy has selective memory.
When 6800U is in front it's negligible and unnoticeable, but when X800XT PE is in front the difference in perf is so clear and noticeable.... Cmon gimme a break here...

Ronin, what do you like more about your ultras? I prefer my xt-pe to my gt at ultra speeds mostly because of triple buffering support, better AA, and it is noticably faster in a few games I play.

Am I the only one who found this a little strange? How is $400 mid-range? I guess what I'm asking is... what the #*$!?
