The above IS the definition of PaperLaunch: something that really looks awesome on paper but is UNavailable to the general consumer

you see them at retailers yet?

I am not a reviewer. I am a general consumer and I paid MSRP at CompUSA. So where's your argument now?

Brian his argument is that you were one of the lucky few who got one, go look at CompUSA.com right now and all you get is an expected ship date of August 15, which means they have no idea when they will get more in so they put it far enough back where they could change it later. So yes, general consumers not as lucky as you are cannot get the PE yet.

Yeah, but by that notion, your argument that this is a "paperlaunch" is void. A "bad" launch, yes, but definitely not a paper one. The center I got it from had 150 units alone. Sorry, if you were quick enough to jump on the deal, but it was there nevertheless.

A few units does not make a general launch . . . . and CompUSA really did send most of their XT supply to TX . . . . really lucky you got one in Cali .. . .it didn't matter if you ordered first or not . . . luck determined on whether you got one at MSRP.

Anyway, it really doesn't matter as we are now arguing semantics . . . you said it yourself and i am agreed with you on this . . . . a "BAD" launch.

Yeah, I don't deny I was lucky and I think we both agree that there's a definite backlog of the product right now, but my point is that the product WAS released. Just not in enough quantities to meet the demand. I don't think it's entirely the video card manufacturer's fault.

Me, i got a 9800'xt' for $223 and am . . . . well (really) p.o.'d at BOTH nVidia and ATI (although their BAD launches saved me some SERIOUS $$$).

EDIT: i am quite happy to compromise and use "BAD" for "PL"

ATI and NV have been around long enough to know what they're doing, and dual paper launches from competing companies sounds mighty suspicious to me. Supplies may be short, but I think they're artificially "creating scarcity" to drive margins up for everyone involved.

Well, actually, I wanted the 6800U, but came across the x800xt first, so............ You are correct. I am happy with my purchase. :thumbsup:

They are trying to put each other out of business and it is beginning to irritate their customers.

i'd sure like a THIRD graphics company that can also compete for gamers' $$$.

edit: Brian48, i wanted the 6800U also . . . and i am glad (in the end) i got the 9800xt - good enough 4 now (for $223; actually $240 as i am installing an Artic Cooling VGA silencer Rev3 today) . . . that'll get a higher o/c than it's current 418Mhz core.

Remind me again why you think the same core that's in the X800P is the constraint? Remember that nV uses the same core for the 6800, GT, *and* U. It makes more sense that 1.2GHz GDDR3 is the constraint, IMO.

I somewhat understood that theory in the beginning but after seeing nearly every GT-owner getting their cards overclocked to the Ultra speed, I can't really think it's the memory.
