X800XL or X800PRO

Just looking for people to give their opinions whether you own the cards or you don't. These two are probably the best value/performance cards out now and many people are probably deliberating the same choice. I chose HIS X800PRO because it has the best cooling set up for the least price and HIS doesn't make an XL. Thanks!

You probably made the right choice, since the X800XL is only slightly faster than the X800PRO in most games.

A guy at Rage3d went from a Pro to an XL, then sold the XL. He claimed when both were overclocked, the Pro was slightly faster.

Well, you'll need to overclock it to more than 520/1080 if you want it to be close to X800Xl speeds. Even at those speeds though, the X800Xl still pulls slightly ahead. This is taken from Anandtechs own preview. http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2299

Yes I know but once you throw in an overclocked X800Xl into the equation, the X800Xl still "wins" once AA and AF is turned on. This is with a X800XL clocked at 440/1100 and a X850Pro at 600/1240. The Pro pulls ahead without AA or AF though. Eithe way, the differences are minimal and I hope the OP enjoys his card.

well he may have really taken it close to 600 to match the XL speeds....otherwise the Pro just cannot keep up with the Pro

I have a ATI X800Pro and the card is awesome. Plays everything on high with no problems. I just wish ATI had some good high level cards for Pentium M notebooks. I have to go to Nvidia to find something respectable.

An x800pro vivo is much better than an x800xl though (at the same price) because the pipes can be unlocked.

Can you still find an x800 pro VIVO anymore? I only see PCIe versions. Can those be unlocked as well, or is it just the AGP ones?

I'm thinkin in the long run more pipes = better for gaming, and I really wouldn't want to mess with unlocking the pro's 4 pipes, my friends have tried and had some problems and some say when you do unlock them they aren't true "16" pipelines or something.

Eitherway the XL does overclock better than the pro.

Actually, I have heard the XL cards are poor overclockers.

i liked my pro just fine; just like my GT better

the differences in performance between the PRO & XL (overclocked or not) certianly aren't enough to be noticed without taking the time to benchmark, and overall the feedback seems to indicate the XL is not a very good overclocker.

personally i think the choice comes down more to cost/availability than performance.. or if you need agp perhaps size -- the xl's pcb is much longer than the pro (even longer than the nv40), which may not sit well with some people.

the pro does not cost more...its about 240 - 250 while the XL is around 270 - 300

they are true pipeslines....they are just disabled while shipped so someone has to just enable them....ur friends may have unlocked broken pipes...some of the Pros cannot be unlocked to 16 pipes

Yes XL = 31gbs memory bandwidth Pro = 28

But most XLs are being made for PCI-E, I don't know why since the majority of gamers use AGP and no one's going to be replacing their AGP mobo for a PCI-E, DDR2 death combo.
