right now i have a a64 3000+ (2.0ghz) running at 2.3ghz rock solid. x800xl video card at default settings, 1gb geil ddr 400 @ 460mhz.

my machine is running very well, and quake 4 runs great. im seeing 50-60 constant when playing single player in 800x600 with everything on except anti aliasing.

do you guys think a 6800gt would play the game significantly better?

or would getting a better cpu be a better buy? i was looking at getting the 3700+ clawhammer, or the 6800gt video card. it all depends on what the bigger bottleneck is.

what do you guys think?

6800gt
i love mine, and i know my buddys x800xl cant keep up with mine, he however is running a dual core pentium D 2.8, i dont know if that is the problem or not, but doubt it. I game at 1680x1050, and have been extremely satisfied, in FEAR even, frames stay between 25-40 fps 65% of the time, and above 40 fps 25% of the time, all max, no AA, 2xAF.

well, considering my system setup. would the 6800gt benefit me more, or would going with a 3700+ clawhammer benefit me more?

This is kinda wierd I think ( My rig in sig ) In Doom 3, ( same engine as Quake 4 ) with my X800 Pro, I get over 70 fps constant, that is everything on high quality..with AA and AF.....and a res on 1280-1024.....And your computer ( should ) be faster than mine....

I bought that a 6800GT would provide a huge noticeable difference in gaming over your X800XL. I had a 6800GT which was a great card. I traded it away to get my gf a laptop and got a used X800Pro VIVO which was about $100 cheaper for me at the time. I unlocked all 16 pipelines on the X800Pro and much to my surprise, it performed better in most games and benchmarks than the 6800GT. I don't know much about the X800XL, but I'm assuming that it's probably similar or better in performance to the X800pro.

Don't spend your money on a 3700+ or 6800GT. Both would give only a little better performance although the 6800GT would give a better boost compared to CPU 100Mhz.

SAve your $$ for a new X2 or 7800GT.

Do not get a 6800gt to replace an x800xl. These cards are very comparable - the x800xl is actually faster in direct3d games , and the 6800gt is a little faster in opengl games.

CPU speed won't matter at all in current games as long as you've got at least an a64 3000+.

If you want to see a big improvement in games, you next step should be at least a 7800gt.

With your current card, I would honestly wait until R580/new Nvidia card come out.

Without AA, an X800 GTO is as fast as a 6800GT in Hardwarezone's test. Your XL should be faster than a GTO and so should compare well with a GT.

But it should be a fairly even trade for a 6800GT, no? Meaning, you could sell your XL for ~$200 and buy a used GT for about the same. It'd be a wash in terms of overall performance (overall IQ is a separate issue that I'm not completely up to date with), but you'd probably see some improvements in OGL games (D3, Riddick, Q4).

Edit: Worth the hassle? Your call. I've heard of problems with 6800s and nF3 MBs, though.
