X800XL AGP on newegg for $180 + shipping

Don't know about big, but I'd say somewhere in the vicinity of 15-30% increase in performance, depending on what you're doing

I'm still running a x800xl quite happily but when the x1800xl is only $20 more that this (after a rebate) isn't it a bit crazy to spend this much on a yestertech vid card?

No, there is no AGP part, but that's why I'm asking WHY anyone would want to lock themselves into another AGP purchase. There's a PCIe mobo to fit any budget and that opens up a wealth of better/cheaper card options. How can it not make sense to move on?

I'm still on socket 478, so i'd have to get a new processor 🙁 new mobo, then the new video card

That's not an option for some people. Especially those that are using systems that aren't quite old enough to replace such as people with socket 478 P4 3ghz systems. I've only seen 1 socket 478 motherboard with PCIE by Albatron. There are also those using Dells that just want something better than their Geforce 5200 video card that their system came with.

With socket AM2, and Crusoe coming out soon, I don't see how it makes sense to buy a new motherboard right now. You're socket 939 will soon be obsolete, almost as soon as AGP is. And as for the Intel choices, P4s already don't measure up to AMDs, they look even worse compared to the new Crusoe processors.

More like 100% - My X800XL 3DMark03 & 05 scores were easily more than double that of my 9800 Pro.

Big difference.

I have a X800 XL 256mb AGP card like the one from the OP. Its not the same brand but should be about the same. THe X800 XL is a great card, in fact its a really great card.

Its nice to stick with AGP but i would not recomend it at this point, its too late in the game. When I got mine it was about a year ago and it was a steal at $260. Either way you look at it, either this time or next, your going to have one upgrade thats going to cost you a boatload of $$$. Stick wth AGP now and you only pay 180 for an upgrade, switch to PCI and you need a new mobo + video card + possibly processor, + possibly ram.

Either way, someday you'll need to switch

I am on a 754 system, I spent a good deal on my DFI board and I have a pretty highly OCed CPU. If I put a half decent video card in my system I bet I would last me for a few years,(I only play RTSs and internet) so for someone like me this is a hot deal. 😀 And I will be all over one of these after my sumer paycheck. 😉

What I am wondering is why some PCI-E fanboy has to post on every single AGP deal thread
saying "just upgrade, spend a bunch of money and time that you don't need to spend so you
can get a video card for $25 cheaper."

Seriously, a new CPU, motherboard, vid card, and a clean OS install is not a simple matter.
Unless you have intense XPU usage depends, you play the latest games, or you just like
to piss away money on upgrades, you do NOT need the latest and greatest (and most expensive) gear.

I'm not a fanboy, I'm just adding some perspective. The 1800 deal is quite a bit better card and only $20 more. That's all. Peace.

ya, a lot better card for $20 more....

then $80 plus for a new motherboard...
$125 and up for a CPU...
the posability of needing a new PSU cannot be overlooked either...

AND a full backup and OS reinstall.
Not to mention troubleshooting new hardware...some find this fun, but not all.

Let me put it another way. If people are looking for a video card upgrade, they are probably fully aware of the possible
upgrade paths, and the fact that PCI-E offers cheaper/faster cards. But overall, this is not the best choice for many.

Maybe because we might be using $400 Opteron motherboards with $600 in CPU's and $600 in RAM. That "cheap" PCI-e card would cost me a small fortune.

another vote for nearly 100% increase in performance. On my XP 2600+, my 3dmark 05 almost doubled. I figure at this point, I'm starting to be processor limited, or it would have been more.

Does this card by chance support AVIVO? My computer is part-time gamer/part-time HTPC and I have a 9800 pro right now. Any video acceleration would be nice on my 1080i/p videos.

According to the newegg site, it supports VIVO, but I think AVIVO is only for the X1K series, which are PCI-Express, except for some X1300s and X1600s.
